We've just returned from a fantastic month outback that took in the
Flinders Ranges,
Birdsville races, then across the
Simpson Desert to Ayers Rock and
Coober Pedy.
One of the highlights of the trip was meeting the lovely lady - Stella - who runs the 'Discount Opalhouse' in
Coober Pedy. When you walk in she will offer you a bowl full of small polished stones and ask you to take one for safe travel. We didn't spend a lot of money, but as we paid she loaded us up with extra little bits 'n pieces of semi precious stone that she has selected from her husbands'
mine. Stella is very knowledgeable about opals, she has lived in
Coober Pedy for most of her adult life and is quite happy to talk about opals, mining and
Coober Pedy, without any 'sell'. If you're going to
Coober Pedy I recommend dropping into her
shop.
Not as sure about recommending the
Birdsville Races as a family weekend though. An interesting experience, with an overload of old blokes from the cities out for a wild weekend with their mates, away from their families. I've never seen so many middle aged guys acting and boozing like teenagers. I guess some blokes never grow up.
PS: I had a win too. And we're still trying to get the prickles out of our sleeping bags.

Unfortunately unless your Japanese or another tourist Opals don't seem to be selling like hot cakes. Nice to hear about great service.

I was talking to an opal miner at
White Cliffs on the way back from the
Innamincka get-together a few months back, he say most of the good Australian Opal is already mined, sold and taken overseas a long time ago.. Nothing really substantial has been mined for some time Australia wide apparently!! Michael

Michael , Opal mining has always been mined mainly by battlers and believe me there is still a lot of opal around underground , trouble is there is also a lot of
sandstone , but whatever field you are on , opal gets found every day and is still getting found :)

Michael,
I'd hardly think an opal miner would tell you a rosy story. They don't like competition hahahahahaha

Who really knows!!! I dont know nor really care whatever way it is , i was just commenting on what a miner of 50 years told me two months ago. Opals for some reason are regarded more highly in other countries than here in OZ!! Thats why apparently most of the best Opals are out of the country. Michael

Opal just happens to be my Wife's birthstone, but she doesn't particularly fancy them.
Lucky Me:-))
