Okay so i've never bought a BBQ before or set one up. The other week I bought one from Rays...

Get it home and the thread on the regulator is different to that on the cylinder valve. So went back the next week and they gave me an adaptor for free. All seems fine but when I put some soapy water over it there are tiny bubbles (very small and slow) is this an issue? I can't imagine any gas build up from this especially being outdoors...???

IJL,

There is no Risk Management to be done here.
There is either no leaks or you don't use it.
The first time it goes bang will realign your thinking.
Is the connection a knured nut type or a spanner type, if it is a spanner type then use a spanner to tighten them. If it is knured nut type and it is TIGHT and still leaking then ask for a new hose or connector.
If you can't stop the leak then return the whole lot and go elsewhere.

Cheers
Trevor

Trevor,

Thanks for reply. It's a spanner type but I didn't use a spanner because it said not to, guess if I don't go crazy over-tightening it isn't an issue.

If it still leaks I'll return.

Cheers,
Luke

Just nip it up lightly Luke, it normally has an oring on the side of the fitting, it probably is not sealing if you just hand tightened.. Michael

I have the same type of adaptor for the smaller bottles on my BBQ. It is a real pain to stop it leaking. You need to just get it at the right angle and then tighten with a spanner. Finger tight has never worked. Bought a new one and that one leaks as well.

I'm not suggestin we all need to employ licenced gas fitters to change our BBQ bottles but it beats me that I have to give a Certifucate of Compliance every time I work on a gas appliance but Ray's and the like can sell/give gas fitttings to any body to install themselves when those people apparently don't know if a fitting needs to be tightened with a spanner or not.

I would have used a spanner in a second had it not been for the WARNING in bold/red saying to only hand tighten and DO NOT use a spanner.

Well I've used it now and no leak.

HI there - early september i needed to visit my mother who lives on the gold coast (i am in sydney) and driving up to her unit (she lives in a complex that has 4 units to each block) i was shocked to see the balcony ceiling of the unit 2 up from hers but in the same block had a burnt out ceiling including a hole about 2 foot diameter, glass sliding door completley bleep tered from the heat and a burnt out bbq.

apparently the new occupants had just moved in, first time away from home, and bought a new bbq, bottle etc and was having his first bbq in his new home when up it went in flames. it had a leak and the whole thing went up so quickly they could only run out and leave all behind. luckily for them my brother was visiting my mother and he had a fire extinguisher that slowed the fire enough until the fire brigade arrived. they extinguished the gas bottle by submersing it in a bin full of water. the fire brigade said they were lucky the bottle was full as it would burn until near empty when it sucks the flame back in and bang up goes the bottle.

all this was caused from a slow leak in a new bbq and new gas bottle. my mother now has bought and fitted a safety guage to hers that is designed to shut of the gas if any leaks are detected. it also helps out by showing the approx amounts of gas remaining in the bottle too. these are only around $30 so i would recommend you buying and fitting one if you have any doubts about your setup. fitting is very easy to do - cheers
