I have a 1998 100 seires non turbo deisel with 230,000km on it. I'm looking at either installing an after market turbocharger or procuring a front cut from a late model common rail turbo. Any recommendations? Has anyone done the 1HZ to 1HZ-FTE swap? if I go the aftermaket option by the time I have purchased a kit, replaced big end bearings and done the valves I'm probably looking at $4000-$5000 hence the interest in the FTE.

I put a 1HD-FTE in my patrol.
Read my blog re that.
The 1HD-FTE inc Auto 5spd computer harness fly by wire throttle etc, cost $11500 to buy with 25000km on the clock. It's a whole new car now.

On Patrol will probably confirm this with his extensive knowledge and work fitting the motor.

The 1HD-FTE is not a common rail diesel, it has an electronic fuel pump and direct injection. ( I hope Im correct here)

I suggest the 5spd auto as well, this combination is awsome.

Steve1958,

A couple of guys on the Overlander forum have recently done this engine transplant. Joff and Philm from memory. Check in the Readers Rides section.

As andoland says, there are few around now. While Philm and I have done our own (I didn't do my electrical though) the undisputed king of this conversion is Jason Dymock at Total Care 4wd in Seven Hills, Sydney. I'm pretty sure Jas did On Patrol's Toni too.

It isn't a hard conversion but it does take some nutting out when you do it for the first time. Both Philm and I started with Petrol Cruisers so there was a few extra bit n pieces that we needed to do that you won't.

The electrical thing is by far the hardest part of the transplant and requires a good knowledge of late model auto electrics. Mechanically it is a walk in the park once you bolt the thing in. There are some things you need to be aware of like sump clearance depending on the donor engine (mine was from a 79 series ute and is too big) intake ducting and exhaust dump. The new motor is fly by wire throttle too so you need to make sure you get everything back to the peddle so you can mount it in place of your current unit.

For the record it cost me $11000 for the motor and box (40,000km old) and another $7500 in fitting costs. Bear in mind though it cost me at least $1000 to convert from a petrol fuel system to a diesel one. The sparky cost me $4000 but that included getting the AC back on line.

You will not regret doing though, my cruiser still only uses 10 – 11ltrs per 100 and pulls like a 16yo boy. BUT if I did it again I’d get Jason to do with it.

Jason would have to be the best in the business to do such a job, he has done many of these types of conversions and can and does do it in his sleep (he lost a lot of that over my conversion).

He also has the best electrical engineer to do the wire and harness work .
Cheers, Colin.

If yours is a manual, it will have the small R151F gearbox, which is usually not up to the task. The Factory TD and petrol motors came with the bigger H150F gearbox.
