Dunco (NSW)
I am after a better AM/FM car radio aerial. I seem to lose the stations too quickly when traveling out of a town. I have a LC100 and believe that the tuner itself is not that strong so I am after an improved aerial.....somewhere in
Sydney where I can visit ???

Dunco,
Does sound like your aerial or lead-in could be buggered. Have found that the radios fitted to toyotas (Fujitsu brand) are very sensitive, and give excellent reception with a good aerial. Only talking about AM here, Dunco.
Try the AM/FM whip aerials made by Mobile One, in Camden. There are 2 sizes, 90cm & 150cm I think, and they both perform
well. They look like a CB aerial. Web site is:
www.mobileone.com.au
Dick Smith used to sell these too. With the longer one, it is worthwhile getting a light or medium duty spring, to give a bit of flex when on rough roads, or working off-road.
Have picked up Victorian AM stations, mid-morning, from central west Qld with one of these, in a 75 series tojo, so they do work.
Hooroo,
Bob.

Yeah, Tony, they make a good product.
Also available are similar aerials labelled as AXIS brand. Might even be made by Mobile One for AXIS??? The 2 I have here are models SW-1 (shorter length) & SW-2 about 1.5M long.
Haven't tried these latter ones, so don't know if they perform as
well as the Mobile One gear.
Hooroo,
Bob.

Dunco. I mucked around with this for some time. I tried a few different aerials. There was not a lot of difference in all I tried. I think it boils down to the quality of your radio. I changed the standard Holden reciver with a better quality aftermarket and then I got a bit better reception from removing my pillar mount to on top of the bar behind my ute cab. I was going to try a boat aerial, but the dollars kept me from doing this. I get great reception when way out on the ocean but thet may be other factors as
well line of sight to the transmitters. if you have a win it would be good to know. Cheers tony

Hi Dunco, try Supacheap or Autobarn etc, etc, & you can get a booster. Not very dear ( maybe $20 or less )....
Good luck

Can't recall the brand but we bought one with a booster built in (switchable for city or country) and the aerial bit runs a wire loop around the inside perimiter of the windscreen (a peel off self adhesive clear sticker with the wire in it).
The switchable booster box and connection to the sticker/wire aerial attaches up behind the rear view mirror so you don't see it while driving.
This thing being inside the vehicle, you never have to worry about losing an aerial in the scrub or about little darlings at the
supermarket car parks tieing it in knots for fun.
It has better reception than any external aerial I've ever fitted - only problem is if you replace windscreens frequently!
When the son gets home with that vehicle after the weekend I'll try n see if theres a brand on it.
Cheers

Hi Dunco
The reception performance (of any given am radio) will be related to the length of the aerial.
So a good
test is to attach a bit of wire 2-3 meters long to the top of your existing aerial and see if this improves things enough for you.
If not it gets harder and you need a better radio or seperate electronic booster (which I don't reccomend as they can cause overloading issues with strong local stations).
