My wife has a dodgy back – something about a couple of discs not quite right. While we were doing Goog’s Track recently she jarred her back, and she wasn’t hanging from any chandelier arrangement in the camper at the time. Pity! The result was a very, very slow and painful onward trip.

I read in a previous similar post about seat options for the GU. I’m interested to hear from people who have fitted grey import or improved seating to their GU and which ones are the easiest to fit. Or isn’t this a problem? And the costs to get engineers certificate (needed for insurance). Has anyone rebuilt their original seats?

Also on suspension seats. Paratus talk about finely tuned suspension by Pirelli in their seats. Stratos talk about their suspension seats reducing the vibration by 60-70%. Is the Stratos system infinitely better for the bad back population or is it the same thing?

I assume most other seats are just sports seats with firm bases designed to hold your body snug while the bumps jolt through you. Not ideal for this application me thinks.

Appreciate your thoughts for a bad back application thats cost effective?

cheers, Mike

I love my Stratos Suspension seat. I rarely wear my back brace when travelling long distances now.
I haven't used other aftermarket seats but will be getting another Stratos suspension seat for the passenger side soon.

Cheers Kev

Hey Kev - did you get an engineers certificate for these? If so, what did that cost? Did they bolt straight up?
Cheers, Mike

I did get and engineers certificate for it and it came complete with a mounting kit for the 100 Series.

It cost me $2200 fully installed and certified.

Just don't hold your breath for them to deliver very quickly. It took them over 7 weeks from when I placed the order for them to deliver it.

Cheers Kev

Kev,
Did D.V.A. help you out with the cost?

Yep,

They paid for the drivers seat in full, but it still cost $2200 to get it all done, whether they paid or I did.

They won't pay for the passenger seat though :(

Cheers Kev

We use suspension seats, they are standard in the Mercedes, the early Pajero up market models also had suspension seats, they should be available at pic a part by now. Eric

Thanks Eric. What model Mercedes? Were yours easy to fit (assuming you don't have a Mercedes or Pajero)?

Mike.
I did not fit them as they are standard, I have both vehicles. The mounting is only 4 bolts on the Pajero and 6 bolts on the Mercedes. The Mercedes is a Sprinter 4x4. 316 Cdi. Eric

I feel for your wife and her back pain/problems after having spinal surgery only 5 weeks ago. Had my L4L5 replaced with an artificial disc and L5S1 removed and fused - all done in one operation from the front just below the belly button in just 65 minutes. I havent been able to 4WD since 2005 so you are very fortunate that your wife has been able to go even allowing for the slow painful trips.

I would be very interested in how she fares if she goes ahead with a new seat setup. I think she not only needs the suspension side looked at, she needs the correct lumbar support also to suit her back.

I am in south west sydney and travelled to QLD on the Gold Coast to see Australias best back surgeon for my problems. If she wants any info please do not hesitate to ask as it can be very difficult to find the right doctor etc when it comes to your spine - some just do not know what they are talking about and can actually cause more damage.

Maybe worth while looking at this link to a bad back website where you can look at the forum and you may find someone has more specific info re the seats there. Any q?s plz do not hesitate to ask
