...refers to a couple who take their 04 Sahara V8 & custom off
road van from
Sydney to
Broome, "you wont believe where this couple have taken a caravan" the blurb says, but apart from the GRR no details of
routes taken are offered. Hardly earth bleep tering
info I thought. We are told the rig cost $200 K...fine, we are told
fuel consumption was 30 L/100...not so fine, & that the van weighs 3 ton, & the whole shebang 7 ton. Hang on...does that
make the Sahara at 4 ton ?. If so that seems to be testing the
legal limits. Perhaps at around 3.5 ton each they sneak in.
Anyway, I offer no criticism of the owners, but to bait the public
with a headline & then offer no substantiation doesnt seem to be
leading edge journalism , & made the whole article a bit of a non event. Perhaps its just me...but I thought I was having a good day. Though I must admit I have almost given up on "Top Gear
Oz"...how bad can it get....bring back the poms......oldbaz.

I imagine the Gross Vehicle Mass may be exceeded! But I wonder how many of us do that anyhow?

Yep, I have seen some beauty's in my travels. The best was a Mazda 626, 1988 model towing a full van about 16 foot old style Viscount with a tinny on the roof of the car. Lord knows how much over the limit he was?

So much of the media today gives superficial attention to what are interesting topics - its all to do with cost - the journos don't get given the time to research the story properly..... so they churn out lots of hastily prepared junk..... as you say the headline was good..... but that only took a minute :-)........ as for Top Gear Oz mentioned above ........I'm interested in cars (not as much as many I'm sure) but I can't watch that Pizzati bloke acting like a pork chop..... and the other blokes don't seem to be making a program of it either......(but its probably the production execs fault anyway)....... episode one plus 2 minutes of episode two and I'm out !!

Darian is dead set correct. Motoring journalists are not given time to do the job correctly. These are hard working people who are sometimes dragged kicking and screaming out of the cake decorating section and dumped into another section about which they know very little. The journos that have few excuses are the 4wd and caravan mag people who have been there for years. Most of what they write is simple advertising.

"the cake decorating section" - LOL!
I remember years ago, a motoring editor here in the West, in writing up results for a car rally, called the Subaru winner a "SuperRoo", a name Ford stuck on a childish decal on the sides of their GT Falcons of an earlier time.
He certainly knew his cars!

Old Baz ,
I read the article and thought it was a lightweight piece of crud .
I particularly liked Denis the "expert" owner who poo pooed the off-road vans -
" You can buy other kinds of off-road caravans but they aren't truly luxurious and their so heavy you need a truck to pull them "
He was clever enough to design his own perfect machine . So perfect was his design , his advice was not to forget to tape up the windows to keep the dust out .
I don't need to tape up any windows in my Bushtracker and you can option up or down any van to make it as luxurious or as Spartan as you want .
What a galah . And what a gullible tosser that Leigh Bottrell must be , to have believed the galah and written such rubbish .
Cheers ,
Willie .
PS
I cannot wait for the next installment . Our daredevils Dennis and Di are going to tackle that horrendous off-road section from
Broome down to
Norseman . I think there is actually one section of dirt between
Marble Bar and
Nullagine so I can see the tape coming out for this horror stretch .

I could not help myself . I sent a note to SMH Drive about the article -
"Leigh Bottrell's story "Luxury and Bulldust" was true to the heading . Bulldust was the right word for it ."criss crossed the outback" was not substantiated in the article. Comments on "other types off road caravans" were ignorant . Dennis, Leigh's "expert " designed his own - which needs to have the windows taped up, to keep the dust out. WOW , where can I get one !
Leigh Bottrell should be embarrassed to write such lightweight rubbish.
Cheers,

Hmmm
Article is not on the online drive.com.au yet. Us out of
Sydney towners have to wait until they put it online before we get to see stuff.

Thought it a lot of hogwash. Most people don't have that sort of money to start off with and there would be plenty of people out there that have done much more than they have and be able to offer much better advise on what you need etc.The only off road they mentioned was
Gibb river road and plenty do that.I'm like you I
have no criticism of the owners but wonder what the journalist was trying to prove.
