Of course many of you would have already read the book, some of you may have even met Tom, I know Ruth has after reading an archived thread about who was going to attend the re enactment in 2004.
I am up to the last chapter in the book (the epilogue). I don't want to read it because it means that I have finished the book. I don't want to have finished it. I have never met the man but I'll be really honest here and say that Tom Kruse, His story, His life, has had a profound effect on me and has really touched my heart. I'll go even further to admit that the admiration and respect I have for the man as I write this and as I have been reading the last of the book actually has made watery stuff come out of my eyes! (and I was only saying yesterday that this girl with tattoos tries not to cry!!)
He really is an Aussie Gentleman. I would have loved to have met the man.

That is about right hairy.. but the more you let people see it the more they take advantage of you and use your niceness and generosity for their own selfishness.

G'day Jo, I was very fortunate to meet, shake hands & yarn with Tom in Birdsville last month, he was in Birdsville for the unveiling of a bust of himself, he turned 94 the week before, I had a copy of the dvd "the back of beyond collection" which includes the original 1953 documentry of the mailman in which Tom played himself, leading edge filming with an under truck mounted camera! If you liked the book this dvd is so much better,it is actual shots of the time! I was fortunate enough to have Tom autograph my dvd of his life. I think you would be able to get a copy of the dvd from the Birdsville infomation centre or they would know where - it's a treasure! seee ya, dingo

Hey Dingo, I am really pleased to hear that Tom is still well and with us! I sussed it out, I am sure you can buy copies elsewhere, but you can also order from the RDFS. You know what I am going to order on payday!
You know I wonder if he really really comprehends just how much he has touched peoples lives?

Jo, I have some pic's of Tom at the unveiling on my mobile, later I will try to extract them & post them on my profile, he was very alert & bright to talk to even though his wife had recently been admitted to hospital, he had flown up from Adelaide for the day - what a contrast! that for a day or weeks just from Maree! His original truck has been restored & is on display in Adelaide. On the back of this dvd it says distributed by RFDS ph. 1800 813 318 or www.lastmailfrombirdsville.com seee ya, dingo

Have been on the website you mentioned.
The photos on your phone, I think it was OZBOC that asked me earlier, you can send photos off your phone to your email address. That is how I do mine. (my phone is a couple of years old, no USB or anything like that)

12:44:08 PMWhat is your name?Ian Doyle - Executive Producer The Back of Beyond CollectionTell your story.Tom celebrated his 93rd birthday last week (28th August) and is going OK. I spent a few hours with him and Valma on the day. Valma is recovering from a recent operation and I'm pleased to report is back in the saddle.

A team of people are working on getting two life sized bronze busts made of Tom to be placed at Birdsville in the yet to be opened Visitor Information Centre and the National Motor Museum at Birdwood in the Adelaide Hills - the home of the Leyland Badger.

The group, coordinated by the head of the Badger Restoration Group Neil Weidenbach has opened an Account with BankSA. The BSB # is 105 010 and the Account # is 107971240. The account name is The Tom Kruse Bust Appeal. If you'd like to contribute to the Appeal (which closes at the end of November 2007) you can EFT funds to the above account, or send a cheque or mail order in favour of The Tom Kruse Bust Appeal to PO Box 2503 KENT TOWN SA 5071. A cast of the bronze bust is in the foyer of BankSA at 97 King William Street in Adelaide. The sculptor is highly regarded SA artist Patricia Moseley.

On a sad note, Tom's Birdsville Track mate George Bell from Dulkaninna Station snapped the hobbles on Saturday at the Port Augusta hospital after a lengthy illness. George appears in most of the Tom Kruse stories including the memorable night in the Cooper with Tom for George's 80th birthday.

George was 88 years old and he has lived at Dulkaninna Station ever since walking from Adelaide with his family in 1932.

George Bell, drover, horse trainer and pastoralist will be sadly missed. RIP - The Bloke from the Birdsville Track.

this is a copy of last years email from Ian Doyle, I spoke with him in birdsville with tom, what another interesting man, producer of the dvd collection, the second dvd in the set covers behind the scenes making of it, finding the old truck & so much more - a movei in itself! seee ya, dingo

He must get that all the time though Doug, He probably rarely gets a moment to himself. But I would feel very privileged to meet the man. But if he has me weepy now out of great respect for the man imagine if I met him!

Hi Jo,
I also have just finished reading the book last weekend, and will now get the DVD. Anyone who hasn't read it, should do so, especially those who have been in that part of OZ.
Check out this site also for some clips of the movie.

Thanks so much for that link Fred. In the book they were saying how the voices ended up having to be dubbed because the audio got all screwed up from the heat, sand scratch etc.. I am guessing that Toms voice is dubbed also but the impression I got in the book was it was someone else doing his voice.

I would have to say it would be stockton beach....... It is the only one that has dunes without houses built on it. Or maybe kurnell which is closer to sydney and you used to be able to drive through there until the government decided to build a desan plant there
