THIS is all that's left of a campervan after it was hit by a road train in the Territory — and the two people inside it survived. Police praised the 47-year-old truck driver who managed to avoid hitting the campervan "driver's door. The 73-year-old campervan
driver and his 30-year-old passenger were D flown to
Alice Springs Hospital for treatment.
Police said the campervan drove out of the
Erldunda roadhouse into the path of the road train on the Stuart Highway on Thursday.

Pity the poor damn truck driver, too, trying to control his juggernaut and avoid the campervan - he'll be a mess for days to come.

It makes you wonder how anyone could get out of that alive.
The fact that they pulled out in front of the road train is out a surprise.
We have a convey of 5 trucks that we use around
Sydney each weekend. As all trucks are leaving our yard at the same time & heading for the same location, we tend to move as a block with a gap between trucks.
The number of times people will pull out or cut in in front of one of the trucks is unbelievable.
Vince

If it was a 73 year old male and a 30 year old female I guess he was a little excitable about getting to the next sleep spot??????

My guess would be a European or American visitor, used to driving on the right hand side of the road. Just had a rest break, got back in his vehicle, moved out the driveway, and force of habit, looked the wrong way for on coming traffic. Coast clear, mind in neutral, pulled out in front of unseen truck.
Result, one traumatized truck driver, one wrecked campervan!
I used to work in the car rental game. Say the same thing happen on our driveway many times. Tyre smoke and screeching tyres/brakes not an uncommon sound around overseas tourists.

Hey Doug
I just picked up a Toyota van with the tilt tray, a couple of backsratchers had just bought it in
Darwin a few days ago, On a straight stretch of road they rolled it, luckily they were not hurt.
There was another roll over on the Jim Jim road this afternoon at the same time.
Cheers Steve.

I do believe some people look but don't SEE. I'm sure majority of people if they admit to it have started to move out and slammed on the brakes as a vehicle has appeared all of a sudden and wondered where it has come from.
Mind you missing a road train hmmmmmmmmmm.

Saw a similar accident not far out of
Mildura a few years ago. Bits of caravan sprawled for ages and diesel all over the road from where the prime mover's rightside fuel
tank was punctured.
Looked pretty speccy.

Many people drive without looking any further than their bonnets. I am constantly amazed at how little people look and see while they are driving.
I know I have had a few near misses from inattention so I guess I cannot speak but they were lucky to come out of that one alive.
My son was a cop in remote WA he saw way to many tourist crashes form total inability to drive to the local conditions.
They usually involved overloaded brand new luxury 4 wheel drives just off the showroom floor and capable of driving anywhere and doing anything ................... Not !

This is what happened to me in July. Coming round a bend doing 100kph and a German tourist (with his imported LHD Mercedes 4x4) was in my lane. I swerved to the left into the gravel but he instinctively did the same. Luckily everyone survived.
Apparently 2 people die on SA road accidents each year involving international drivers at fault (so major crash tells me).
