Peter Garrett has announced that from 1 April 2010 entry fees will again be payable to enter Kakadu.

They will be $25 for 14 days and will apply to non Territorians over the age of 16.

If only we could get midnight oil to do a protest song about this! I am pretty sure there will be no change in the park infrastructure as suggested and maybe the current camping fees should cover the visit. Probably $4.5m to go to the save the Peter Garret foundation.

Kind regards

Interesting that Territorians will be exempt.

I would have thought that was discrimination.

Kind regards

C'mon Footy, read the article :))) You'll see it is the usual P Garrett rubbish.

I'd like to know why Territorians are excluded though.

We paid $18 in the 80's to get into Kakadu, quite expensive at the time. It was free when we went the next time, and being the tightwad that I am, I found the experience much nicer.
Why would I read MR Garretts garbage ? I can generate enough of my own :))

Hmm...$16.50...sorry, correction.
Why should the taxpayers subsidize the park ? Because we have paid a fortune in company and personal taxes, and have built up a huge surplus; the Liberal Govt were raking in taxes faster than they could spend it (except at election time).
What we should be asking is why should be subsidize the lurks and perks of our elected representatives !

Is entry to the Barrier Reef national Park free to Qlders ??
Or any of Qld National Parks where a fee is payable?
I mean I can understand NSW...after all they're broke !

On our return from Darwin via the Savanah Way to QLD in 1999 we wanted to only travel the highway through the Kakadu. We were going to return a later date. With three adults and a baby on board the fees were unbelievable. We did a u turn drove back a bit and took a dirt road to the left. It got us in through the park no worries.

The park entry fee should never have been taken away in the first place, since it has gone the infrastructure has gone down hill.

I say bring the fee back, don't winge about a small fee as you as TAX payers are actually paying for it anyway, and the 70 % of over seas tourists that come here get in for nothing.

If you don't want to pay a small fee for visiting Kakadu, then you probably wouldn't appreciate the park anyway.

Cheers Steve.

Maybe I'm getting old and read it wrong .... ?????

1/. Your saying that interstate visitors should pay an extra fee to see something taxes all ready cover ????

2/. Interstate visitors should make up the difference for the 70% of O/S tourist who get in for free ????

3/. An interstate family of four should spend a fortune getting to the Territory, then up the NT economy in regard to food, fuel and maybe accomodation purchases and still get slugged an extra $100.00 ????

Appreciate the park ????? .... Its only kakadu .... no better than many other places in Australia ... just different.

You must be getting to old.LOL

1: No everyone over 16 be it O/S travellers,Interstate or Territorians, should pay, if they charge a fee then the Taxpayer won't be burden with the cost.

2: my mistake 70% of visitors are O/S travellers, 25% are interstate, and 5% from the NT.

3: Only persons over 16 have to pay, so if the family of 4 have kids under 16 then it's only $50, I have travelled Oz extensively and don't mind spending my hard earned in other states.

Most National parks in oz have a park pass or similar so why not Kakadu, By the way Kakadu in run by the federal Gov.

It's only Kakadu, well your welcome to your opinion as I am with mine.

Cheers Steve.

OK ... that all makes more sense of your post ...

Absolutely ... all should pay ... no exceptions - or not at all.

Im aware of the age limits ... however all my kids are over 25.

Still disagree on park fees ... kakadu or anywhere else for that matter. If I have to pay out to someone ... I want more than visual satisfaction .... In a national park I dont expect facilities, just someone coming round to cull the pigs etc., at appointed times.... licensed shooters will do that for free and onsell the meat.

" only kakadu " was not a put down ... Its a big country and it is made up of of lots of good places. None are better than the other, in my opinion ... only different.

User pays sounds emminently fair to me.

Why should my family subsidise O/S tourists?

As Steve has said, the facilities have gone down hill since the the fee was taken away. Knackered if I want to spend my "hard earned" to give tourists fine facilities for free.

Apart from the odd verbal "punch up" Steve and I have had, I sincerely like the way he thinks.

Jim.
