Selling the car

Have jusst completed a fantastic trip in the 2001 manual diesel Prado, very happy with the car. Cape York, Savannah Way, up and down the NT, across the Tanami and back from Broome to the Gold Coast. Did 18,000k and hardly noticed it! Had the car converted before departure, with shelf and fridge slide, and removal of back seats and cargo barrier. Still have original seats. The inside is a bit scratched from all the corrugations. Love the car, but finances dictate I need to sell it. My question is - do I sell it as is, or do I first have it restored to original state, with seats in the back? If I sell it as is, does the extra gear add value at all? Obviously some would love to have it set up for a trip, but others will want it for city driving (how could they?). What is the best website of paper to sell it in if I keep it as it is? Many thanks for any comments from all you people who helped me buy it in the first place.

My thoughts only.

Leaving it set up as a "tourer" will mean you are trying to sell it to a very small portion of the market.

Restoring it to original status will open you up to 90% of the potential market. Then sell off the extras for a bit of extra dough.

Jim.

True Jim (but Im going to slightly disagree and watch the moderators on this one!!)

we sold our 80 series all set up as a tourer with the second set of tyres & rims too...everything that we used on it pretty much....even though your aiming for a particular market, there are people out there looking for something already set up (to what ever degree).

The bloke who bought our car wanted something that was already set up, not too worried about scratches as he wanted to head to the Simpson in May - It only took about 4 weeks to sell and he flew down to Sydney airport from Cairns to buy it....

They guy even wanted to buy the fridge, rack sack, tents, swags, boxes....you name it he wanted it...! I told him $20k (!!!!), changed his mind and was happy to settle for $13k for the car and tyres.....!!

I wouldnt strip a car to stock if it was set up....unless I wanted the bits to keep..

Why not place an ad on this site first with it all set up?
If you took it to a car yard the 1st thing they would do is rip all of your good gear out and return it to original.
By advertising here you might just find a buyer.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Jims on the money, but make sure you have it detailed, either do it yourself or pay someone, nothering turns a buyer off quicker then a car that has not been prepared for sale.
My last two 4bys I have sold privately by people spotting them in the street with for sales signs on them. But this site, car sales, trading post all good. Try ebay although it amazes me thet people will buy a car unseen.
If you have to sell it put a realistic price on it as most private Prados for sale are overpriced at the moment, check the opposition out and put a competive price on it. At about $25000.00 it should sell.
Good luck Pete

I've always pulled all the accessories off and restored to original - got $39k trade-in on a 2002 Prado when it was almost 3 years old, simply by putting the original set of grandtreks back on, removing the bullbar and refitting the original rear trim that had been sitting in the garage. Then sold my second set of tyres, bullbar, storage system, roofrack etc etc

Prices for 90series Prados have dropped a bit - the diesels are now 6-9 years old. Depending on mileage, $20k for a good GXL is about normal.
