Hi All,
Has anyone done a trip down the NSW Darling River lately? I have heard all sorts of stories.
What I would like to know:
* Where is the best place to start & finish?
* How close is the road/s from the river? Which is best?
* Are there reasonable places to pull up & camp rather than caravan parks?
* How long did it take.
Appreciate comments,
cheers
DonaldGet out there and use it.
Life is too short not to.
All the best...

Donald, there was a bit of discussion about this over the last few months. Do a search under Darling, Pooncarie, Mungo.

Hi Donald,
Just these last School Holidays I took the kids down the Darling River Run.
I started at Bourke and went to Louth, stayed 3 days at Trilby Station. Because it rained on day 2 of our stay at Trilby, i was only able to get as far as Tilpa on the Run. The road from Tilpa to Wilcannia was closed so we left the Run and went north from Tilpa via Tongo to White Cliffs.

The section of the Run we did was a good dirt road and not too corrugated. Watch out for Roo's in the mornings and dusk, they are plentiful and sheep, goats and cattle too.
I saw the Darling River from the road when we crossed it at Louth and again when we crossed it at Wilcannia. Otherwise it can't be seen from the road, just the trees are visible.
Trilby Station is right on the Darling River with campsites along it. There is a choice of powered and unpowered sites and there is other accomodation there too.

I highly recommend it as a destination for a few days stay at least. There is fishing and canoeing and the kids caught Yabbies there too.

I am not affilliated with Trilby just a very happy customer who can't wait to get back there.

Cheers

Donald I would consider killing two birds with one stone and make the Menindee Lakes V.high on my list I was there @18mths ago and it was nearly dry but the sunrise with emus on the green grassed lakes was awesome. The river itself was more than I expected in terms of width and depth. The National park was a great place, good camping and not too organised.
Have a great trip

The Darling River run is a great trip did it in 2001. If you contact tourist info at Bourke they can give you a list of properties who don't mind you camping on their land. Always check at the homestead first. They can also organise a bus tour of Bourke and surrounding area, very interesting. It may also be possible to hire a small houseboat at Louth.

More and more properties are putting in tourist facilities. We looked at Kallara which is just nth of Tilpa and it looked very nice.

Menindee is beautiful but there is no water in Menindee lake itself at the moment. It looks more like heathland. Mungo is always worth a visit.

One of the best holidays we have ever had. Easy, interesting and relaxing
