Gidgee
I am planning a trip From Kalgoorlie to
Rawlinna then down to Cocklebiddy. I have read a few old threads, however was wondering had any recently done the
Rawlinna to Cocklebiddy track.
It seem from old threads its a maze of roads heading south!
How confusing is it really? Anyone with some good notes it would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Gidgee

In July of this year we completed the
Connie Sue Hwy then traveled from
Rawlinna to Cocklebiddy via the rail line to the
dog fence, south along the east side of the
dog fence & then intersected the
Rawlinna Cocklebiddy road. With Oziexplorer & the hema / nat maps it was not a problem.
There are numerous station tracks & this is basically what this road is. It improves as Arubiddy is approached, The going is slow with some rough
limestone sections.
The track file on the ExplorOz site will help.Image Could Not Be Found

Gidgee we did the trip some time ago & as mentioned it's pretty much station tracks & not a gazetted road as such. It's certainly not maintained at all being fairy rocky with the occational washout. We sourced permission before getting on & they were quite happy, in fact suggested a shortcut through the numerous options near the homested, but stay clear if there has been heavy local rain as they like most locals wouldn't appreciate the mess left by someone just passing through when wet. After looking at the Hema map we were expecting a decent signposted road but the detail of the turnoff was fairly vauge & is a little confusing. (Not sure how accurate current GPS mapping is of the area)
On a side note
camping in the
Rawlinna town area is prohibited with no visitor facilities to speak of when we went through.

Hi Craig,
In 1997 I was able to secure a house with pool table and table tennis table and full facilities in
Rawlinna for $10/person for 1 night.
I doubt I could get that bargain these days :))
Cheers
Alan.

From what I could gather the town was solely set up for the mine/quarry/Rail?
Cheers Craig.........

Craig Hi.
The town is but if you call the
mine on channel 16 UHF and let then know you can
camp at the muster sheds.
Cheers
Richard

We have done it several times, but I must confess I was following two other vehicles so did not get lost. If I remember, the hardest part was finding the correct track out of
Rawlinna. We did get permission from I think two of the stations.
The temperature was the hottest I have ever encounterd - we literally could not even stop to eat outside the car. Got our food out of the camper and ate inside the vehicle it was about 46 deg C.
When we got closer to Arubiddy we spoke to them on the UHF. They were mustering and asked us to keep clear of stock. They were quite friendly.

If you get the opportunity make sure you
camp next to the railway line - we have camped just west of
Rawlinna (Ponton
Creek) Its great to see the trains and surprising just how many there are
