There is quite a lot of people here on the forum that wants to know what the drums were used for ,I just got an email from AWM .... seems we're still none the wiser . He sent a link that showed drums that looks like they were used as a guide for the edge of a strip, nothing like what I seen, email below

Thanks for your enquiry about the drums at Fenton.

Apart from confirming that they are the heavy duty 44 gallon drums used during the Second World War, we can only speculate as to the role of the half-buried examples in the arrangement in your photo.

May I refer you to an image held in the Memorial’s collection atAWM webpage which might be useful.
I shall continue to research your question and let you if I am able to uncover any information on this.

No info on the canisters yet, I don't think they match the frame, just so happened it was laying in it, someone would put it there, look closely at the hole/cradle, it is much larger than the canister.

" choofers " sounds right from experience .... Hot water supply and field kitchen cooking items. Mil issue items never looked much better than the ones made up of scrounged bits ... LOLOL

Could still be airstrip markers though .... its been a long time since ww2 and stuff would have been shifted around. Lot esier to move loose stuff to embedded concrete, and then call that spot the rubbish point.

Be interesting to see the final call on this.
