The road is a cruise. I will let some one else comment on the time of year. You might need a machine gun to ward off the flies at certain times of the year :-))

As Kiwi Kia says take the fly net, the road/track is not a problem, just check the weather before you go out there from Innaminka as it gets a bit slippery and sticky when
water added..... oh this time of the year... bit warm .... worth it though

Hmm,
Interesting perceptions you get from different people hey!
We were up there in July for the ExplorOz National Gathering and did a trip out to
the Dig Tree.
I would hardly call it "a cruise"
The road in from the main turnoff was quite rutted in parts and it would depend on how often it is graded.
Like any dirt track, after a fresh grading you could do it in your standard 2WD family car, but following rain the track may be closed for a while, then wear the scars of vehicle travel while the surface is still soft and be "cut up".
Rarely do you come across surfaces where 4 wheel drive is necessary, but the extra ground clearance and underneath protection is where a 4WD vehicle comes into it's own. The ability to place the vehicle in 4 wheel drive, (or all wheel drive) and low range is an additional bonus.
We also have a 2WD family car, but there is no way I would consider taking it on an "offroad" trip. It has sports bodywork and bugger all ground clearance and would simply be destroyed driving on outback track surfaces. That is what I got the Jack for.

We were also there in July, just after the EO gathering, & the road was in pretty good condition, I wouldn't hesitate to take a 2 wheel drive, providing it was dry.

Went through in July and it was great. Went down the main road in October with a group of 70 vehicles on the
Bourke Outback Trek and the section between
the Dig Tree road and Innaminka was very rough. Quite a few people blew tires and some damaged trailers. There was also a lot of work being done on the road. As said depends on whether a grader has been through.

Last time I went there a few years back (but current road alignment) it was cruise but there were some quite stony sections - had to be quite careful with tyres - anyway.... all depends on current conditions - the Trading Post at
Innamincka might have first hand advice - as usual the flies were horrendous (but that is no reason not to go to such an historic place :-o)........ we were there in April - school holidays - summer came late that year - it was 40C at the tree - about 38C back at
Innamincka. November ? Check the met bureau for recordings in that region as an indication - could be anything, but most likely damned hot.

Like all outback tracks its conditon varies on a weekly basis and particularly at this time of the year when they can get some torrential downpours. Best thing to do for the must up to date report is ring the
Innamincka ranger or the pub

Innaminka??? Im coming west from
ipswich SEQ...
but after having travelled the outer tracks of central aus i guess i know what you mean by ungraded roads and what they have to offer. I was hoping i guess that being Qld the roads would be maintained regularly.
i have a pajero but i was after a comfy sunday drive as we're bringing our daughter for a couple of days out...Rod

If you are after a "comfy Sunday drive" why would you go to the Outback?

In May it really was a cruise. In September I was around the area but did not go back into
the dig tree and all the local roads really were a cruise (other then local road works :-)) First time I have a personal escort through road works !

Rod,
was out that way in August. It was "reasonable" between
Innamincka and the
Bourke and Wills Bridge but had copped a fair flogging due to the holiday traffic. They were working on it around the B & W bridge so it was slow going. That should be open by now. The road in to the tree and
camp area was stoney and rough. That won't have changed. The Road Works Mob were pulling rock out of a few quarrie sites about 5 km along the B & W acces road so the big trucks had cut it up a bit and created extra joy for the motorists in that first 5 km section.
Cheers
Mick
(I did a blog on road and track conditions in late August. Here is the
