I am heading up from
Sydney to Frazer island over Christmas in my 4 runner, and I was wondering if any of your members had advise on the pick of
the beach camping spots. I've never been there before and am excited about the trip. We have a large tent to set up (9 man) so we need a roomy little nook! I know someone on here will know a "best secret spot". Does any one recommend any special equipment? Have a jump pack, towing straps, 12v compressor, stauns for deflating,
first aid kit and large handheld spot light anybody got any other ideas?
Thanks Peter (Babylon) Owens

I like
Waddy point protected from the wind and Back Packers. Generally a few good safe swimming spots in the tidal channels which will be good in summer. You will be able to to most day trip from Waddy.
Orchid beach shop is very close for fuel and basic supplies.
Try
Waddy point top
camping ground nice and leafy and room enough for your tent. a good shower block $1.00 for a hot shower. search
places on this site waddy point/
camp ground should be some pictures.

If you want a good
beach camp site, go just a bit further up than Waddy to the Maloo area, or the
Ocean Lake area. Waddy gets too busy for my liking but you can still use the facilities, even though you're camped on
the beach. There's drop
toilets only at
Ocean Lake itself, but nothing on
the beach.
Be warned, Xmas is VERY busy on Fraser so spots might be a bit limited.
Showers at Waddy campground are $2 for 3 minutes..

Hate to say this but the long range forecast for Christmas is Torrential rain. This is from the same guy who forecast last years big wet and he's about 80% right. He mentioned about the rain last Christmas and we went
camping and bout did we get soaked and they evacuated Frazer Island !! But boy i hope he's wrong !

Not too sure about the dates but I do remember it's suppose to be the same as last year just after Christmas (but I hope he's wrong)
don;t forget they are predicting about 5 cyclones this year with about 2 or 3 crossing the east coast. !! YIKES!!

having camped on fraser for the period between xmas and newyears i can give you actual real advice as to what it's like.
yes it is busy there at that time, but no different to normal school holidays. we noticed alot of people camped more towards the southern half of the island, almost like the first vacant spot they saw they chose to set up in, they were like a refugee
camp. once you started to get past say the maheno wreck, things got alittle better, was still busy but not refugee like. we arrived on the island 2 days after xmas that time and still found a fairly decent site away from all the masses.
we go to fraser every year for a 2 week period and always stay just north of
the cathedral beach shops / resort. as we stay put in the one
camp site for 2 weeks we find this area the most central to everything, not close to anything (other then the
shop) but just central.
special equipment=
your snatch strap, but no good to you unless you have rated recovery points on your fourby.
obvious to say but i'll say it just incase, SAND PEGS , the other normal type won't be much use for pegging stuff down.

I'm with Rumpig, good spots past Cathedral but not tooooo far from everything. Waddy is good but just too far from the eastern beach townships for my liking. But yes, very bloody busy Xmas - New Year, be prepared! I'd also advise to take additional tarps, rope, tie downs etc. If (and when) it storms / rains with a blow, you'll need something to keep the 45 degree rain out of the living area. When it blows, predominant winds that time of year are hot strong 20 knot northerlies or strong SE winds with squally showers. So on Cathedral you'll be fine tucked up in the dunes in the northerlies but hold on when the SE winds come!
