Choice of rims & tyres for off road camper

Anyone with quick advice????
New off road camper being made, but the question to me is what rims & tyres. The options are the steel rims with AT tyres in 15" or 16", or alloy mags with coopers in 17".
Current vehicle has 16", but I'm quite likely going to change to a Prado (and hence 17") in the next few months.
My old 4x4 brain says that steels are always preferable to alloys, and I haven't heard great things about Coopers (but then I have been using BFGs happily for 10 years).

Yeah, I would avoid the Coopers.
Stick with the BFG,s.

Match them with your vehicle and use whatever tyres you're happy with.

Not necessarily the same as can be 15-16-17 , but make the bolt pattern the same and the diameter fo the tyre /wheel combination the same. ( and the offset the same, so go for some model Prado rim, or maybe Hilux)
So Prado bolt pattern and tyre and wheel that will fit Prado.
I think this disqualifies everything but 17 inch if you are taliking a new model Prado, but if the up to 2004 or whatever , then 16 or 17.
The tyre size diameters are available on tyre makers sites eg 215 85 X16 just about same diameter as 245.75x16.
But until then you have a problem of decision making.

"Same", as in if you have 17" on car, and 17" on trailer, then they are all interchangeable as spares etc.

Where possible, we match tyres to the tow vehicle, and use BF Goodrich All Terrains on road and farm vehicles. We recently spent four months covering over 15,000 kms including the
Gibb River Road, Duncan Road, Tanami,
Mereenie Loop and
Great Central Road without a single flat. The insurance is we carry four spares (two on caravan and two on vehicle).

When I had my trailer made I chose to supply the
wheels and tyres myself. That way I got exactly what I wanted.. I wouldn't deal with any trailer builder who wasn't willing to allow you to supply the wheels/tyres.
If your definitely going to change to a Prado then I'd suggest 17"x 8" P30 steelies. These are available from CSA and others for $90-$120 each. Otherwise genuine 17" x 7.5" Prado steelies are about $400 each new or about $120 each second hand (if you can find them)

Did the same.
Provided my own rims and tyres.
The manufacturers rims were 16x7 with 265/70/16 6ply, and the tyres were 2nd hand from a wreckers with unknown history.
I use 16x6 with 235/85 16, 2nd hand nissin RV rims, got two for $20 each and two for free from the dump.
With the prado, can you fit 16" rims on the back?
I thought it was the front calipers that stopped 16" being used on the front? In which case why not go for 16" on the trailer of the same overall diameter and offset as the prado. Could use the trailer spare on two axles that way, trailer and rear of prado, and the prado spare would fit trailer.

When I was lliving in
Sydney last time I toyed with the idea of having 4 muddies and 4 AT's or even HT tyres. the thinking was that around town I would store the muddies on the trailer and use the road tyres when I went bush it would be a relatively simple job to swap the
wheels around so the more aggresive rubber was on the car.
I never got around to doing it but the thouhgt was there. When I moved out to
Broken Hill the idea lost its appeal because I was in the bush so much. But now I am back in the big smoke adn the idea is growing again
When it come to the choice of tyre I have had good and bad runs out of both Coopers and BFG. I think tyres are perhaps the most difficult thing in the world of 4WD to decide on. We all use and abuse them, we expect them to be great on the road and indestructible off road. When they are good that is what we expect but when they let us down they are unforgiveable. Tyre failure is the most common cause of a spoilt trip.
The best advice I will give when it comes to choosing tyres is find a dealer, and individual tyre tech who you trust and follow his advice.
My problem is the guy who I trust lives 1200km away.

2 points: First, if all your tyres & rims fit on every wheel that's gotta be a smart move doesn't it?
Second point, in absolutely thousands and thousands of
miles on all sorts of tracks with an off-road camper, I've never had any experience that would indicate the choice of tyre on the camper was anything to waste any thought on - I usually simply use the cast-offs from my 4WD.
And a 3rd point for free, High tyre pressures are the worst enemy of camper trailers, especially off road. Unless I've got a long way to go on the blacktop before my track starts, I keep the camper's tyre pressures as low as possible. Off road, that's just enough to stand them up so they soften your
suspension and keep your camper in one piece. Often less than 20psi.
As for the argument about Coopers v BFG - get over it - they're all just tyres!
