Broken windscreen replacement - Toyota or a coy like O'brien's ?

Good morning Explorers,

On my way back from Vic. last month, a rock smashed a six inch radius section of my Cruiser's windscreen.

It must be replaced, but it is so long since I have replaced a windscreen, I have no idea about the best place to get it done.

Should I take it to a Toyota dealer, or a company like Windscreens O'Brien? Do aftermarket ones from companies like Windscreen O'brien, have the quality of the genuine Toyota ones?

Thanks,

Willie.

Willie,
Wouldn't that be covered with your insurance?
Let them handle it.
The policy I have on my Pajero includes windscreen replacement.

Cheers,
Dennis

Don't assume all insurance policies cover free windscreen replacement. Many still don't.

All Toyota will do is get a supplier and fitter to do the job anyway.

I did the ring around up here in Brisbane about 4 months ago when mine cracked and there was a $200 difference between the big company's and a small mobile guy that wanted my business. I always ring 5 places and I was very happy with the work he did

Ring around.
It only needs to last as long as the next large stone :o)
Even toyo ones aren't that good.

Yep what he said :-)

Toyota dealers will use someone like O'Brien's anyway.

I took the option with insurance of 1 windscreen a year. Seemed a good idea at the time and proved correct within a few weeks of getting the car.

O'briens came and did it in the driveway. No fuss, quick job and no probs since.

I've had problems twice with bus windscreens replaced by Obriens, persistant water leaks despite three reattempts at sealing it.
Try Derek at Clearview Autoglass 45886644 based at Londonderry/Richmond but does an excellent job. He is mobile as well.
He made all the new windows for the Humvee and also specialises in mirror glass

Peter,
I have just spoken to Derek and he is booked for Friday morning.
I will ask him if he can fix my useless concave/ convex passenger side mirror as well .
Thanks,
Willie.

Ask him before he comes as he has templates hanging on the wall for mirror glass and can cut it in the workshop and fit it when he gets there.

Willie,

Depending on your local bloke, I find that a good smash repairer can do a good price on windscreen replacement. They should be able to use genuine or aftermarket.

If he is a shonk though, you will get a leaky windscreen that gets sandblased easy and pay through the roof for it.

Worth a phone call anyway.

Please tell me, how or where on this site, do you see it's my birthday. I know it's meant to be here somewhere, but I can never find it.
Thanks,

PS. My windscreen is covered by my insurance, but I have a $500 excess, which is not waived in the event of a windscreen claim.

Bit late but I noticed in the Open Road NRMA are advertising their windscreen service. Don't what they are like.

hi , as other members have mentioned , check your insurance policy - some cover 1 windscreen a year....

just for future reference - if your following a truck and a rock falls from it - record the number plate / truck number time and where - and company name. RING there office and inform them one of there trucks dropped a rock off there trailer and damaged your windscreen ... most will come to the party and cover the costs - this does not include a rock that may be thrown up off the road - must come from there trailers ....

Hi Willie, its worth taking the cover out. Its only extra I think I paid $50 for each vehicle and this covers any glass on the vehicle, side windows.windscreen, back windows etc. No excess required when you need to get a new one just ring them up they come out and all is good. They mainy use Windscreen Obriens BUT i personally dont like them through bad experiance so I rang NRMA to see if could use some one else and they said to get a quote from my preferred repairer and if was the same or close to it they would pay it only difference was I would have to pay up first, get receipt then take to NRMA and claim it back. I have a crack in the screen in mine for nearly 12 months now runs write across from drivers side to mid way of the screen, just havnt been bothered to get fixed yet. Need to get done before rego, they let it go last year dont think they will let it pass again as its got bigger. WHG
