Are there any satalite versions of memory sticks for internet access on a laptop in the bush.
UHF radio for mainly open roads and ranges?

Hi Wheaters, there are nearly 50 different types to buy .
You need to know if you want a car navigator, or handheld in which you can hook up to your laptop
but if you want cheap then any Garmin Nuvi will do the job when you install shonkymaps for the bush stuff, otherwisw you need to spend an extra $230 for the Oztopo V2 for the better maps.
Hema Navigator start from $950 but a cheap PDA can do the same job for less than half the price once you install OziCe and TomTom software.
There are many others coming on the market but not all will suit you off the outback stuff

I personally run a GME UHF TX 4600 6db and 4.5db antenna and have a couple of Motorola 2 x watt hand held's for around the vehicle and
camp.
I run a Garmin Nuvo 760 GPS with Topo maps and tracks4australia maps, not quite a cross over but pretty close.
I also run a Garmin eTrex (with Topo and tracks4australia) hand held GPS for hiking and as a back up for the Nuvo off road..
These things collected over a few years.
I prefer the GME UHF to Uniden, nothing more than a preference.
Garmin over Magellan, again no more than what I first got.
GPS
http://www.gpsoz.com.au/products.htm have the best range and some specials on Garmin. but check prices around the traps as you can do better.
UHF Check the major players GME, ICOM and Uniden and read as many reviews as possible.
Good luck

Do your self a big favor get a handheld gps all you need is lat"s & long"s and a good map and LEARN how to read both. Maps show the whole area and will not let you down when you need them.

I agree,
I always carry maps and a compass as
well. Can't beat them to find alternative
routes.

"Maps show the whole area and will not let you down when you need them."
That is a misleading statement as it very much depends on the location covered and the map provider. They can still let you down....

I don't think I've ever seen anyone read a position off a topo map in lats and longs - and get it right.

The advantage of being trained by the military, and/or joining a 4WD Club is that this is part of training and accreditation.

Rural Fire Service people get trained in
Grid References and that usually works out - but Lat Long rarely is done correctly.
