Any suggestions for a good day trip from Mornington Peninsula. Not Talangi please. Want an area with some things to see, mildly challenging tracks and not much in the way of bog holes. Done a fair bit around Walhalla.

Sure. I'll let you know where we decide to go and where and when we're leaving. Where do you have to come from?
Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi Twinkles

A lite an easy drive , would be to head up our way to Yea area
with a mission to drive thru the old railway tunnel.

Its quicker for you know as you head up the freeway to Ringwood.
The freeway is worth checking out by itself if you have not already.

Then via Yarra Glen as you drive past various wineries and coffee shops thru the notorious Tolangi (on the bitumen road) and soon you come to Glenburn , where you can witness the enormous construction effort and ripped up farmland with hundreds of huge pipes laid end to end as part of the effort to take water from the Eildon area to feed Melbourne.

As of last friday the pipes stop right opposite the Gleburn roadhouse which makes the greatest coffee.
As you have a coffee you can see where 6am last week they bulldozed a 90 year old pine at the back of the church, which was planted in memory of the 1st world war dead.

Heading north, just before yea you turn right and work you way up to the tunnel itself.
Its great to drive thru. If you like driving skill tests you can drive thru without your lights on.

Have a picnic in the area, then depending on time you can choose several different ways back.

All the main waterfalls are running hot at the moment so I'd go back via ginters road thru the forrest taking in the Murrindini falls (walk) and suspension bridge.

Thanks Robin. That sounds good. I saw a trip on a 4wd show on channel 31 to that tunnel. Would the return trip you suggest have any challenge in the tracks?

Hi Twinkles

The return trip , I reccomended along ginters is just a nice dirt forrest drive suitable for 2wd most of time.

However there are turns to 4wding off to both the left and right heading south.
A nice , but not extreme track (and no bogholes) is to turn left into Ault Beac track (while heading south) follow this till it ends a a T intersection about 5km along , then turn right and soon you will come to a lagre section of powerlines and a good dirt road to the right called sec rd. Follow this down to Murrindini scenic reserve and stop at suspension bridge for afternoon tea.
From here you can walk to falls , but if you want more 4wding instead , then a few hundred meter north of suspension bridge is a difficult track going straight up the hill.

The rooftop map of the area shows all quite well and is available at Glenburn roadhouse on the way up.

Hi Twinkles,

Some of what Robin described is in a "Nissan Trek" from 2003. We followed it a few years back and it was a good drive. Some of the tracks change from time to time (at least when we did it) due to forestry operations.
