Stan The Dinner Plain Track is of an easy standard & was upgraded a few years back removing a couple of bogs. The steep sections dropping down to the Dargo river were also bypassed & is now of an intermediate level even when wet. One track beginners should avoid when cutting accross to Talbotville is Matheison spur as is fairly steep.
Search button Top right on the tool bar. Box opens up when highlighted.

You should try one of those old inventions Warfer everyone used in the good ol days called a 'paper map' It's amazing what detail they show ;-)
Mathieson spur takes off from the Upper Dargo Road coming out at Treasures on the Dargo High Plains road. The first 1.5 km is fairly steep from the river, not particually challenging but the clay surface being slippery when wet.
Do yourself a favour & get the Rooftops Dargo-Crooked River map. Even works without batteries.

I'd think twice about that one if I were on my own! It is a tricky piece of driving toward the top and a long walk out if it goes wrong.

Stan as suggested the track out to Blue Rag is pretty rough & one doesn't want to muck up their line on the rock ledge approaching the summit. May be a good one to return to with a friend or after a bit more experience.
As for an easy return trip from Talbotville to Dargo you can simply follow the Crooked River Road down past the Kingswell Bridge then the Short Cut Road accross.
To make it easier for others to respond to your questions Stan rather than clicking the respond key each time, it is often better to ask further questions of an individual by using the "Followup" in that particular box. That way it ensures we get the message as an email with your question.

If you are fit the walk up from the Crooked River to the New Good Hope mine stamping battery and steam engine is worth the trip. I haven't been in to the other side of the ridge yet.

Must take the waders up next time and check out the Jewellers Shop at Grant too....

Hi Stan,

From the Talbotville camping area, go through the river on the start of the Crooked River Tk which if you were driving into the camp from Grant is immediately on your right as you reach the valley floor coming down from the cemetery.

After several (many) river crossings you will find a track on your right up the hill a hundred or so metres to a small hillside parking area from where you can walk up the hill to the battery.

The Rooftop map of the area is probably the best of the lot. You can get it before you go or get it at Dargo. The Dargo Wonnangatta Adventure Map I think it is called.

There are some great books on the mining history of the area with some fantastic pictures of what it used to be like. I'll see if I can rustle up some names for you and if you have time your local library may be able to get them in on interlibrary loan for you.

The Jewellers Shop mine near Grant is an adit running back into the hill side but it's about thigh deep in water from shortly after the Entrance. I've been meaning to take waders and a good torch to go and have a bit of a look.

Let me know if I can help with any other info.

Dave

Hi Dave
Thanks again for your help and I will check out the history of the area before I go just like any of the other old sites I visit like Yalwal or Yarranderie I did get the The Rooftop map of the area from Parra Map shop

The photos that you posted around Moscow Villa are just great just shows you how thing change in a course of a few hours from Snow to Floods

I hope you trip down the Murray is more successful then my cod trip to Lake Windamere looks like the same weekend that you were at Moscow Villa as it was wet and blow the brown dog of its chain and no fish

Thanks again Dave if you do find a book name for the area drop us a line mean time I will check the Libraries

Leigh and I were on Mathiesons on the weekend (before the rain) and it was in pretty good nick.

Plenty worse around Talbotville such as Bulltown Spur & South Bassalt Tks.

Interesting deer shooters camp at the bottom of Mathiesons. Very permanent.

If you go through that way take a look at Harrisons Cut. The track from Collins Flat to the Birregun Road (Stock Route Tk) has a sign at the bottom marked Private Property. It may be so, but it's a public track. Ignore the sign (there are two other tracks nearby into private property with gates on them.) as the DSE contractor grading the Upper Dargo Rd stated it's a road.

The detour is definately a long way around.

Haha,

Spelling of track names...

As for the creeks, we were further over than the Gatta. I've been up to the bottom of the windscreen in the Wonnagatta with the water splashing up onto the roof, wipers on. That was after far less rain than we had Saturday night. I don't think I'd like to have been in there trying to get out on Sunday. I'd not have left until Monday or so.

As an indication of how fast things change I'll post some pics before and after of the creek below Moscow Villa. The first pics are at about 6am Saturday morning after a few showers and snow overnight. You could step over it.

The following pics are about 10am Sunday morning 26 hours later, after about 125mm (Ensay) rain.

And another shot of Running Creek which flows into the Tambo on Sunday morning.Image Could Not Be Found

Remember all of the above is only days before the start of summer. Never go into the high country without being prepared to stop somewhere for a few extra days - an a plan on how to let those at home know you will be late so we don't have to come looking for you in treacherous conditions when you are fine, just holed up somewhere. (ie. HF or Satphone)

More rain falling here at the moment and the radar up there had some 50+mm / hr storms on it today.

Carefull with your river heights and plan your detours early.

Things should settle a bit by the second but some of the crossings will still be hairy. The exits and entry points on some will be chopped out - particularly those on the upper crooked river.

Have a good trip. I'll be cod fishing on the Murray...
