Cape York Campgrounds

Hi, planning on doing the cape next May/June. What are the nicest camping areas near the tip? What are the recommended fishing charters from Siesia or nearby?

I can reccomend going to Loyalty Beach camp ground which is right on the beach with good facilities.Iwas there last year and previously I had stayed at Punsand Bay campground but I found it very run down last year and not as nice as Loyalty Beach.I did not do any fishing charters but there are a few to choose from.it is a nice drive from Loyalty Beach via Punsand Bay to the tip and then on to Somerset Ruins and around the point and back through the rainforest to Loyalty Beach. This drive can be done comfortably in a day--Remember to get some black lip oysters around the point from Somerset.
Enjoy-but no swimming upthere.

I concur, we stayed at Punsand Bay this year & were very disappointed with how rundown it was compared to Loyalty Beach.

Well our group of 5 vehicles [ 3 towing c/ts] would have to say that dont be fooled by the "pretty" leaflet -website for loyalty beach .. most of the foreshore site/s are on permanent reserve for tour bus groups , 7days spent and not once was the so called bar/ resturant open , main toilet block was only cleaned twice in the 7 days....... Seisa you can just walk to the jetty , restaruant is open , has small onsite shop and the kicker is that it is a $1 per person per night less than loyalty

Yep Loyalty beach for us. Seisha quite noisy because of it's proximity to the wharf (loading unloading ships during the night etc)

We stayed in Punsand Bay when we were at the tip in 2005... We found it to be pretty ordinary as far as the ground was all black sand so by the time we got back to our site from the shower our feet were all black again..

At Bamaga the sites were a lot cleaner with regard to ground surface but it was a lot busier.

I would stay at Bamaga again for a couple of nights so I could do the fishing charters from there again but wouldn't waste my time with Punsand Bay a second time around.

Never went to Loyalty but I think I missed out on that by previous posts.

cheers

DONT stay at Ounsand, same as everyone else, very very run doqn, Loyalty looked great but we stayed (after one night at Punsand) at Seisia, great close to the jetty and very nice. Also we took an overnight boat trip to Thrusday & Horn islands, very much worth doing

We were up there about 3 years ago & based on recommendations went to Lloyalty Beach but only stayed there 2 nights. Was way overcrowded & not helpful so went moved to Siesia & it was great. Had our own kitchen area with sink & there was no noise from the wharf. My vote is Siesia,
Willy

As most of the others have said I would much prefer Loyalty Beach compared to Siesia. Siesia just another caravan park, Loyalty Beach alot quieter don't have to camp on top of each other.

However if you are self sufficent one of my favourite spots was Somerset, camped right next to Frank Jardine for about 4 days.

best spot i saw was down by the water at the somerset ruins, no facilities here but the view was great and it doesn't cost anything. we stayed at both punsand and seisa, seisa had better facilities but the beach at punsand was nicer IMHO. don't remember any noise from the jetty at all when we were there.

Ahem rumpig, but you may have forgotten the $99 Jardine River ferry fee for your 4WD and trailer which entitles us to a "free" camp. Anyway, 3 nights at $17 a doulble at Seisia last May was OK for clean facilities and it was NOT crowded at that time. We had heard Loyalty was better so drove around one afternoon for a sticky. But the shady tree we had at Seisia seemed better than the Loyalty flora. 6 of one, a half dozen of the other.
There's always Umagico and you could have had it to yourself in May. See pics in Places, Glenn

long before they included the "free camping" it cost $80 for that ferry ride. then back in 2006 when we last went it cost us $88 for the ferry, i reckon extra $8 was for GST, we also got this "free camping permit". what a crock, just another permit to let you camp where you used to be able to camp for free anyhow. atleast these days it's not cash only patment and you actually get a receipt.

Phil
as far as fishing charters go i can recommend John Charlton -Cape York Fishing Adventures out of seisa wharf
my wife and I did a full day charter in July this year and got lots of tuna and queenfish. we tried to go up the jardine but the tide just wouldnt let us over the sand flats so we just fished off the river mouth after lunch.
I had bruises all over my gut for about a week from the rod the fish were that big and strong.
cost was $700 a day for the boat and guide everything supplied.this was cheaper than Weipa on the way up.
cheers

Depends on what you want. The best place we went to and one of the three highlights of our 7 month trip around Australia was Muttee Heads. There was no facilities and for the first 2 days there was no one else but us. For the camp grounds Loyalty was in our opinion was the best. As far as fishing charters John Charlton has the best name and appears to have great local knowledge.
