Hi,
We need to buy a new car.
We need 7 seats as we have 3 kids but are having a 4th next year. 2 will be in car seats.
We have a Jayco Swan to tow.
We do not go off road. Just want a nice car to drive around town, that can tow on a weekend away ( most likely to a van
park).
We love the Mitsubishi Grandis, but the tow ball weight is only 85 and we need 100. Really dissapointed as the car is perfect in every other way. Just needed a bigger engine and better for towing.
So, next car we are considering is the Captiva. Anyone have one of these and are you happy with it?
We only want to spend $40-$45k - max.
Kluger costs over $40 for a base model.
Prado is too expensive unless we buy one about 4 years old and we would rather not as we are leasing.
Santa Fe - more for your money with Captiva
Territory - Rear seats too small and back
seat does not split.
Mazda CX9 - too expensive
Patrol/Pajero etc again too expensive.
Landcruiser - way to big for us.
Any help or suggestions,
Thanks

Ok.
Friend of
mine has the captiva diesel. He is relatively happy but isn't using it for towing or anything. It gets about 12L/100km in mostly town driving. A little higher than expected.

My brother had a Captiva. He's a Sales Manager, we fitted a Drawer Unit for his brochures. Plenty of space in the back.

If $45K is in your budget then you should be able to get a new CX9. We have the CX7 (don't need 7 seats) and its a great vehicle with the exception of being a tad heavy on fuel.
We looked at most of the above and it came down to the CX7 or Captiva (diesel) but for various reasons found the CX7 suited us better. Even if the CX9 does cost a few $$ more than the Captiva, look at the resale at the end of the lease and I am sure you will come out in front.
Cheers
Captain

I guess it all depends on which Korean manufactured vehicle you want to buy - Daewoo versus Hyundai. It was very interesting the way Holden bought out Daewoo and then took them off the market in Australia, to have them some months later reappear with a Holden badge on them. (Admittedly the Captiva has surfaced since that time and the Holden engineers have had some input into them) Personally I wouldn't touch the Captiva with a barge pole. How many 5 year old Daewoos do you see on the roads - compare that to the number of similar Hyundais.
Just my opinion.

Just to be pedantic....Holden didn't buy Daewoo, General Motors, of which Holden is a minute part, bought them but in fact has owned a large chunk of them for years I believe.
As for which vehicle, I too would pick between CX9 or Kluger. The Captiva looks nice on the road but know little else about them.

Don
From the
Sydney Morning Herald 13/12/2005 :
"The P76 Awards..........For seizing the Daewoo: Holden
Soon after taking over Daewoo in Australia, Holden closed it down. It seemed a wise decision, as Australians had comprehensively demonstrated they didn't want Daewoos at anything more than a giveaway price.
Then something odd happened: Holden decided the problem with the cars wasn't that they were boxy, flimsy, agricultural and without flair. No, the problem was that the little chrome badges didn't say Holden. The result? Two Daewoos cynically rebadged as the Holden Barina and Holden Viva, selling on nothing more than price and looking suspiciously, stop us if you've heard this before, boxy, flimsy, agricultural and without flair......."
And of course they were followed by the sensationally epic EPICA!!!
The General is having a lend of us and surely the public at large will wake up eventually.
Once again only my opinion

Tessa,
Just realised you had responded.
Anyway, Holden or GMH (that is GENERAL MOTORS Holden) may have bought the local distribution franchise but Daewoo remains a part of the global GM fold just as Holden does. In fact Daewoo is probably a lot bigger than Holden but both are small cogs in a very big wheel and both play some part in either development or production of global models.
Holden developed the Omega platform..(Commodore VE) and builds alloy V6 engines that are exported, the latter were not designed here however.
Daewoo builds several cars that are rebadged as other GM makes and you mentioned some, Gemini, Barina and Epica. They are also sold elsewhere as is the Captiva which is an Opel Captiva in Europe and a Vauxhall Captiva in UK.
And unfortunatley, we now get the Daewoo Barina instead of the Opel Corsa which is what the Barina used to be..a vastly superior vehicle.
And, given the global meltdown and GMs precarious position, I would not be surprised if Holden gets the chop as a manufacturer. After all, the only car they develop is the Commodore and big cars are on the way out and GM Europe who make a hell of a lot more cars than GMH make some cars that would be suitable for Australia..Vectra, (new model), Astra and Corsa. Mind you, I think the VE Commodore is their best effort by a country margin.
Enough of me..but I will say that I like the Captiva more than the Territory and I am a bit of a "Fordie".

I have a Kia Sorento (diesel) and its wonderful in all respects including the price and fuel economy (10 around town, 12 when towing my Jayco Outback Eagle). Large towing capacity, strong and smooth and a true 4WD.

Few things to consider:
Have you driven & compared the base model kluger or CX7 to the Captiva?? Compared residual values??
Would you buy a Captiva if it had a Daewoo badge on it??

I'm not really up to speed with 7
seat softroaders, but why spend that sort of brass on a pretend 4WD. In todays market you should be able to bargain your way into a real one. I notice the captiva sets no records in the sales race either, much better with a Kluger. Certainly worth more at changeover......oldbaz.

Sounds nice. Just a thought, you might want to check the load rating on the 20 inch tyres if you are towing?

Im amazed at the amount of people who post a thread "what 4x4 do i buy" and in less than 24hours have bought one. Which raises the question. Did they need to ask?.
