Hi all,
Just landed in Tas today but we've spent the last week or so in NE Victoria.
I'd wanted to have a look at the Vic highlands for some time now. I'd always imagined there were a couple of main unsealed roads through there and a few side tracks to explore. But, bu**ar me, there's dozens of tracks,
trails & roads covering thousands of sq. kms.! I had no dea there could be so many public access roads & tracks in that area. (Makes SE Qld look like the gov't locked up place it really is...) You Vics really have a remarkable free resource here - please use and appreciate it.
We did a loop of sealed/unsealed roads from Eskdale via
Omeo then headed to
Bright and parked the 'van at
Porepunkah. Our next adventure was a drive (via a detour to Mt Hotham) over the
Dargo High Plains road to (strangely enough)
Dargo and an attempt to head over to Swift's
Creek and
Omeo via "Jones Road". Now, we'd bought a couple of the admirably detailed "Rooftop" maps but they didn't mark that the
bridge crossing of the
Wentworth River had been washed out some time back and it was now a not-insubstantail ford.
With the previous weekends rain and high-country snow falls, the ford was running deep and brown. With jeans off and a rough 'walking stick', I waded in to the edge of the really deep & fast
water but, when it got to mid-thigh and the 'crown jewels' were about to get dipped into freezing cold
water, I called it quits. We relunctantly retreated back the way we'd come. Perhaps if we'd been in company with another vehicle we'd have tried the ford, but not on our 'Pat Malone'.
Nevertheless, we were quite taken by the extent and grandeur of the high country and would like to return for an longer 'sample'.
I suppose we'll have to 'make do' with the tracks of Tassie for a few months but we'll be back...
Ian

You must be from up north Ian, down here in Vic the crown jewels have already retreated into the inguinal canal due to the brass monkey weather we usually get here every couple days. You Northerners with your free hanging crown jewels are just showoffs hahahahahah

Hi Bonz,
Tell you what, if the 'jewels' HAD contacted that
water I'd have had another two Adam's Apple lumps in the throat, such would have been the rate of 'retreat'!
If I'd wanted to skite, I'd have used the old line: "Chop me off at the knees and call me 'tripod'. "

I was transferred from S/E QLD to regional Victoria a number of years ago. When I got here I was really surprised at at the number of
places available for 4x4 touring compared to S/E QLD. In S/E QLD. aside from the 4x4 parks, there is really bugger all compared with Victoria, with most areas having been closed off. And remember S/E QLD is a area nearly as large as Victoria.
IMHO, there are a couple of things that has helped keep the tracks open in Vic. The 4wd association is very active with political lobbing. Also, a lot of the regional towns, especially around the high country and
Otways now substantially depend on the dollars injected into the communities by 4x4 tourers (and trail bike riders) so the last thing they want to see is them banned.

A group of us (4 cars) spent a week in the high country of Victoria in Jan 2008 & we all said what a wonderful place for touring. And the
Dargo pub is a welcome sight.
Victorian authorities should be rightly proud of themselves for the way they balance accessibility with conservation. What's the point of preserving something by locking it up, and then tell us that it is for future generations to enjoy also, hows that possible?? if no one can get into the areas to enjoy them, including future generations!!!!!!
Well done Victoria ;-)
Cheers Colin.

Ian,
Having just got back from that area I know what you are talking about. The rain and snow can and does change a easy trip into a real adventure.
If I had come across a river that was just getting close to my knees I would think twice about crossing. When we crossed the Crooked river last Wednesday it had dropped over 2ft from the day before and had cleared up so the river bed could be seen.
Next time you are out that way, if you turn onto McMillan track that runs off the
Dargo High Plans Rd. Follow that down to the
camp site at
Talbotville. Set up
camp there for a few days and do day trips from there.

Shhhhh.... not so loud Ian. We wouldn't want everyone to find out :-) You really don't know the half of it. There are so many tracks here of all different standards that it has taken me almost 25 years to see about 2/3's of them. The High country is just one area. Then you have the
Grampians,
Otways,
Big Desert, Wombat
forrest along with 50 odd smaller state parks dotted around the place.
Despite quite a few track closures in the past, 4 Wheel Drive Victoria have not only lobbied to keep most of them open but are now working to have many Management only tracks (MVO's) reopened for Club trips.
Cheers Craig...........

this is a bit of a change, most of the time we Victorians have to listen to "northerners" tell how much of a 'hole Victoria is.

Victoria is not a hole, it's just that bit around the open sewer (called the Yarra) thats the problem with Vic. LOL, Colin

Victoria is a great place...its just that cold weather that makes it hard to enjoy its environment to the fullest.
Nothing worse than having to change a tyre and your fingers are freezing, theres is mud over everything and your shoes and sox have been wet and cold for over a week.
I can only enjoy that stuff for no more than a fortnight.

HIya zha zha cruiser .
What a load of rubbish,People fly from all over Australia to enjoy our ski fields,Trout Fishing etc etc,As far as 4wd or anything outdoors really with the quality of clothing around these days and its not expensive there should be NO REASON to feel cold in the Winter period..You telling me a Tropical Rainfall doesn't turn dust to slushy mud...

If victoria is the "place to be",why are they all "on the Move"?
As the old women of Prauge said- "that is that is".
