Hi,
I have a jerry half full withe some diesel.

Just wandering how long it will keep for (been there in the garage for a few months) and if necessary how is the best way to get rid of it.

There isn't a lot but don't want to just poor it out in the drain:) but happy to poor some where else in the back yard - on some weeds may be.

Cheers Steve.

Commercial parts cleaner is diesel/power kerosene 50/50 less likely to catch fire than when you use petrol also unleaded has some nasties in it which are best not to be exposer to when washing parts

What's wrong with pouring it into your tank? If it's only 10 litres, it's only a small portion of a full tank, so unless you KNOW it to be contaminated, there is no reason why you couldn't still use it I would have thought.......

A few months???

As long as it's been stored in a sealed, clean container out of the weather, there should be absolutely nothing wrong with it...

I have on more than one occasion used fuel that I'd had in jerries for more than a year.. never had any hesitation in doing so..
I do however, take the precaution of pouring it through a very fine gauze strainer, and a dose of Chemtech or similar is not a bad idea in such circumstances.............

no a few months back diseal was about $1.80 now it is about $1.40 so if he sells now he will lock in his loss.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies.

I am not sure of quality as I got the diesel initially to use to rinse out a couple of new ones I had bought.

It is currently sitting in a jerry my father gave me. The jerry is an old army one and I reckon could be close to 50 years old but still in good nick but had previously been used for petrol.

So I have some doubts of the contents and would prefer to just throw away - like poor on some weeds or something, dig a hole and empty in but not sure if that is the right thing to do.

Richard,

I am in the same boat with a 4 litre drum of petrol/oil I bought for my chain saw and a 4 litre drum of petrol I bought for my Honda gennie.

I will not be going away again until May 09, and I would like to get rid of this and start fresh then.

It's a real problem isn't it. I have no solution (legal/ ethical) apart from possibly paying a motor mechanic to take it off my hands, or finding someone with a lawnmower who can use it.
Good luck,

Willie.

Take it to the local recycling plant and leave it with the waste oil.

Tipping fuel on weeds pollutes groundwater.

I'm with you Ross.

In SA we have an EPA depot for hazardous wastes:
http://www.epa.sa.gov.au/hhwd.html and I'm sure other states have the same.

Our local council tip takes 20litres of oil, radiator coolant etc for free, as part of an Australia wide initiative.

Donate it to your local Rural Fire Service for use a Driptorch Fuel.

I did that on the weekend with the 5-year-old supply of emergency fuel I keep in the car.

keep it for 'wood woof' to start camp fires, or if you have a property where snakes an issue, dribble it around your perimeter fencing, snakes do not like to cross it.

Mugga lane should have facilities. Failing that call ACT No Waste and find out when the next Free collection is.
