Hi all
I have just purchased a 901 EeePC and wish to install a touch screen and inbuilt GPS for navigation. I have oziexplorer, Hema 4wd maps & natmap CD's.
I am pretty handy with most things, but a little concerned at getting inside this little gadget with a soldering iron.
Does anyone who of anybody in Sydney they could recommend to do these installations for me.
Any ideas would be welcomed.
Regards John

Hi John, I use the same setup but I have a mouse GPS in the glovebox and I dont use a touchscreen. Works very well as is with a 12volt power supply from ebay. If you really need to go down this path post on one of these and Im sure you will get a taker or at least a how to do it. great little PC by the way. The plastic clear see thru cases make a great base to mount on the dash, if you need some piccies let me know

cheers

http://www.google.com.au/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4ADBF_enAU229AU230&q=how+to+put+a+touch+screen+into+an+eeepc

there are many how to's that are simpleto follow in the above link, also try endgagdet, instructables and hack-a-day.

from what i see they are pretty easy if you follow the guides.

http://gizmodo.com/5021562/eeepc-900-gets-a-touchscreen-mod-thats-so-good-we-want-it-standard

http://hackaday.com/2008/01/19/add-everything-to-your-eeepc/

so try any of the links and it should be easy.

just take your time and patience and you should be good. when people think laptop they think pain to fix not really, i have pulled apart many lappy's and if you take your time and don't rush you can put them back together with no problems.

cheers have fun and good luck!!!

Christopher, you give me some confidence, but this will be my first time inside a computer so I will treat it like everything else "there's a first time for everything" The worst I can do is bugger it up and then eventually fix it.

Thanks for the links. I will study these carefully.

Slightly OT, but....is the screen readable on these EEEPCs in direct sunlight?

Thanks...

If you do it and stuff it up you void your warranty big time.
Also i note on the EEPC sites that it isnt always successful

Much easier to buy a Bluetooth GPS and just set the PC up before moving Much safer than using a touch screen on the move

Thanks everyone, some very helpful information. I am going to give this a go as from all reports this should work. I will visit Jaycar for a very fine soldering iron and a bottle of rum to steady the hand. I will still have my laptop and VGA screen as a backup if it doesn't work. Regards John
