Heather, they say if you use it with Bio Magic for liquid only, throw an handful of soil in the cassette to give it something to work with. I haven't done this, but found Bio Magic excellent, and we know it is safe to dispose of.
A bit more about using Bio Magic (or i presume any similar product).
It will even improve a septic system that isn't working properly. It is safe to dispose of in composting
toilets, but i suggest doing it when no-one is around in case they think you are killing the eco-system with chemicals.
I can't vouch for this, but apparently cassette contents buried when using Bio Magic will bio-degrade and disappear very quickly (in days), whereas that used with chemicals will be 'preserved', and last for a long time.
For those who haven't had success with Bio Magic, is it usually because of the presence of chemical residue from a previous usage. All traces of chemical need to be removed from top (flushing) and bottom (cassette) tanks by soaking with a strong Bio Magic solution and rinsing it all away. This worked for us as previous owners had used Thetford Blue.
If any smell is escaping from the cassette when the
toilet is not being used and open, then the seal needs to be replaced.
