We have recently bought a porta-potti to use in our van. I am very sensitive to chemicals and certain smells. We bought Eco Green to use in it because it was environ friendly. But the smell still makes me feel nauseous. Can anyone suggest a chemical that doesnt smell or have any ideas? If it is only wee'ed in, can it be emptied every day and therefore chemicals not needed or would that be to smelly! Regards Nari

Hello Nari, We also use Bio Magic & it does not seem to have any odours to worry about
Similar questions such as yours have been asked on this forum before & the general consenus of opinion seems to be that Bio magic is the "best".
It is available from most camping & caravan retail shops. Cheers

Whilst on this subject, and I did check out the porta potti website, exactly what is a "waste disposal point" - i take it is not a standard toilet bowl? What if you're in the bush and you go straight home? Sorry for my ignorance but I thought they'd have this info on the website.

A waste disposal point is designed for emptying portable / caravan / mobile home toilets. Normally a lift up lid at ground level, with a screw cap on a pipe inside. Empty the waste tank into it and wash down with the tap and hose supplied.

At home there is no problem emptying into your standard toilet. If you have a septic system, it is important that you use a chemical that is septic tank friendly. Bio Magic is one. Portasol is another.

Hi Porl,

By all means empty into your toilet bowl at home if you wish (taking Norm's warning about septic systems into account) but please, Please, PLEASE, don't ever empty it into a public or caravan park toilet bowl.

A full portable toilet cassette can hold far more waste material, and expecially paper, than a normal toilet can handle and it's very easy to clog it. And if you had to clear a blocked toilet that some inconsiderate sh*t had poured their porta-potti into, you too would very understand why caravan parks have lots of signs imploring customers not to do this!

We've done quite a bit of park relief management and had to deal with the consequences, and I'd happily strangle anyone I caught doing this...

Hehehe, it's amazing what lazy/ignorant people do.

While servicing the underground sprinkler system at a caravan park recently, what did I find under the valve covers for numerous sprinkler taps? yep toilet waste from either porta-potties or mobile home tanks!! Yech, this still happens even though the dump points (3) in the park are clearly marked, both on the maps that every guest receives & at the dump points.

I travel with a porta-potti in the back of my troopie, and I always had some smell wafting from thetoilet....not a grogan smell, but more of a chemical smell. I've tried all the different chemicals, and they all did it to some degree....the best liquid I found to be Portasol.

One day a guy in a camping shop suggested I try Odour-b-gonetablets, so I bought a pack.
Well bugger me, these things really work:-)
Now there is no smell at all....zero, zip, zilch.
Couldn't be any easier to use either, just break a tablet in half, drop half in the top tank and half in the bottom tank.
Oh, and they do break down all the unmentionables too.

I won't be going back to the other (liquid) chemicals.

Cheers

Glen

Do you just use the tablets and no chemicals or are the tablets in addition to control odour?

We used Bio magic and found it didnt work - when I mentioned this at the local suppliers, I was told that it only works effectively with a combination of solids and liquid, so if you only plan to use it for peeing, as we did, I think you will find it tends to pong!
The person in our van who empties ours (not me, I am the person who fills it) is not at all keen for me to use it for solids!!!

We use the Thetford Aquakem green premium in holding tank and Aquapink one in the top now with much better results, however the green one does have what I think is a pleasant smell so you may not find it to your liking.

Heather, they say if you use it with Bio Magic for liquid only, throw an handful of soil in the cassette to give it something to work with. I haven't done this, but found Bio Magic excellent, and we know it is safe to dispose of.

A bit more about using Bio Magic (or i presume any similar product).

It will even improve a septic system that isn't working properly. It is safe to dispose of in composting toilets, but i suggest doing it when no-one is around in case they think you are killing the eco-system with chemicals.

I can't vouch for this, but apparently cassette contents buried when using Bio Magic will bio-degrade and disappear very quickly (in days), whereas that used with chemicals will be 'preserved', and last for a long time.

For those who haven't had success with Bio Magic, is it usually because of the presence of chemical residue from a previous usage. All traces of chemical need to be removed from top (flushing) and bottom (cassette) tanks by soaking with a strong Bio Magic solution and rinsing it all away. This worked for us as previous owners had used Thetford Blue.

If any smell is escaping from the cassette when the toilet is not being used and open, then the seal needs to be replaced.

Hi Motherhen,
ours was a new toilet in a new van when we used BioMagic so there was no chemical residue (we bought it in April 2008) and the seal is fine .
The Aquakem green is safe for septic tanks so we think it is ok to use, and certainly works well. However we do try to find a dump point when travelling as we hardly ever use van parks. if there arent any then we use a public toilet to empty it.

According to the knowledgable folk on another forum a tablespoon of the Woolies generic nappisan in about a litre of water is better than anything! (The "triple oxy stuff" was mentioned!)
Apparently you may need to add another tablespoon if not emptied within a couple of days, but it's said to be better and cheaper than any of the proprietry products.
Cheers Roy

The latest in the caravan forums is to use the home brand versions of Nappysan eg Nappy Treatment Plus.
The cheaper home brands from Coles/Woolies have Sodium Percarbonate as the active ingredient, (same as OdourBGone but much cheaper), and states it is safe for septic.
It has a higher percentage of active ingredient than the dearer Nappysan. The peroxide in the percarbonate breaks down to oxygen and water.
Most flush the contents 3-4 days, and it is suggested that occasionally sanitize the unit by filling with water, adding the Nappy Treatment Plus, and leave it to soak for a day. Much more environmentally friendly than the green stuff which is still a mild form of Formaldehyde.

Bio Magic is an expensive ripoff in liquid form of Coles home brand triple enzyme nappy treatment. We have been using it in our work portable toilets for 3 years with no issues. In winter you can go 4 days or if need to go longer add more, in summer 3 days and if needed to go longer add more. If extremely hot weather 2 days and add more

Roughly for the 15 or 20L bottom tanks in vans, use 3 tablespoons. It may need to be topped up with a spoonful in a couple of days.
Nothing in the top tank. The pink liquid in the top tank tends to encourage black algae. Spray of Olive oil onto the seals keeps them pliable. Dont use ordinary vegetable oil - warning from Thetford.
Some people add fragrance to the top tank instead of the pink stuff. I am not too sure how compatible this is as it may dry or damage the seals.
Like Paul said this nappy treatment is much, much cheaper that the commercial versions such as bio magic, and it is designed to handle dirty nappies, so it is ideal for these toilets (and keeps them clean as well).

With the 3 tablespoons you need to put in a minimum 1.5 litres of water into the bottom tank.
As what you deposit into the cassette has fat and oil included, a good squirt of Cousins Morning Fresh into the top tank makes a big difference. If you give a quick flush prior to using it gives the bowl a bit of lubrication along with the seals. The Cousins Morning Fresh keeps the seals slipping and sliding. You cannot help but notice how much easier the valve works once it gets lubricated by the Cousins Morning Fresh.

just set me straight please, 3 tablespoons OR 15 Ml of nappy treatment plus or the home brand version in the bottom Tank. And a Squirt of Morning Fresh in the top tank to keep the seal lubed ??
We've got a 13 Lt porta Potti and the current chemical stinks as bad as the pottys contents.

Why 1.5 liters of water in the bottom tank? after we start using the toilet it wont take long to get 1.5 liters of fluid.Isnt that the same..

TY.. Rod

Thetford advise adding that amount of water when adding the green liquid. I only add a little water to the bottom tank to disperse the powder, much less than 1.5Lt. Even if the powder sits on the bottom of the tank, it would be similar to adding the tablet form, dissolving in a slow release which I think is better. Works OK for me.

We have a porta pottie, as well as a thunderbox.

We prefer the thunderbox, and we sprinkle a bit of lime on every deposit.
But when we do have to take the porta pottie, we use Hayman Reece chemical. Brilliant stuff.
