Hi could some one out there please explain to me the workings of the next G network. Like most people I did have a cdma phone , which I had to throw away. I had no choice i bought a next G phone LG TU550( Telstra Blue Tick Phone). My wife and i are old age pensioners we dont use a mobile phone while we are home ( we use the landline phone). WE only use the mobile when we are travelling (3 months of the year). We recently travelled Townsville ,winton, Diaminta nat Park, Boulia, Plenty Highway, Alice Sp, Ayers Rock, all gorges etc, then back to Townsville via Mt isa.My query about the phone is that in all of the distance covered we never found the reception next G, anything to shout out about. We saw telstra towers along most of the highways but no next G signal until we where close to towns. What amazed me was the reception lousy ,in the top left corner of the screen on the phone, where it tells you what network you are on , it always displayed 3G network, Why is that i thought it was supposed to be the super next G , The only place the network changed to next G was at Ayers rock near the fat cat tourist Resort. In all of that travel that is the only place the phone displayed it had changed to the next G network. Why is that so. Thank you to all people that reply to this email Kind Regards Pam & Graham

Hi Graham

There has been plenty of advice on this site about LG TU550 being a poor performing phone , with Samsung A411 being the better of the low end phones. The Nokia and Telsra country phones are better performers.

The blue tick means that it can take an external aerial and this is what you need to do to get acceptable performance from that phone.

Next G can have a practical range of up to what CDMA had.

The Samsung A412/411 is much better than a few of the so called higher end phones!

When it shows 3G you are actually connected to the 850 Next G network.

I have never seen my phone show "Next G" - because that's just a telstra marketing name, not a type of network.

No Cell based phone works away from towns or major highways.

We recently drove most of the Townsville - Mt Isa (with a few detours before heading to the Gulf and across to Cardwell. We had reception almost all the time whilst on the Western leg, (only around towns heading east)

We had a LG TU500 with external aerial and found it be an excellent phone for range and reception.

Those towers could have been for all sorts of things, not just cell towers.

When you say that it displayed "Next G" what exactley did it display??

cheers

Dave

Sounds like you have a faulty phone. But it could be a setting on your phone. You can set the phone to use the older telstra network.

We've found that next G outback phone coverage is as good as if not better than the old CDMA on our trips west in the last couple of years.
It's weird sitting around the fire checking email and surfing the net on the phone!
Using a Nokia 6120, force cradle and external antenna (only a windscreen one not a broomstick)

We also have good reception for our LG TU550 but it is does have a broomstick aerial. When travelling out west (on highways) we have reception most of the time. SMS will work at the outer fringes of reception when voice will not.

Changed to Next G from CDMA whilst in Kununurra. Travelled south, then over Nullarbor to Vic. I think our phone is a Telstra one. Better coverage than with cdma. Do not use external aerial.

unfortunatly true
I have the TU 500 nd it is remarkable not so much where it will get reception but where it wont

After a trip last weekend throught the heavly populated South West of WA where it spent the majority of the time out of service I would say you would have buckleys to none of getting reception the places you speak of

Surprisingly the cheapest Next G is one of the best according to all owners.

You can get the Samsung A411 for $99 at KMart, Target, Dick Smith etc including $10 prepaid.

Aldi sell it for $99 with a Bluetooth Earphone thrown in.

In one word YES.

BUT take it in to a NOKIA service centre and get its software upgraded to the latest version.

Despite what some might think this is not a firmware upgrade but a complete software update which only Nokia can do.

Reason some of the older ones like mine have a tendency to go to sleep and wont wake up.

Mine did from new and I finally got sick of it and took it in to them.

Two days later and it now stays awake all the time.

You can buy one from Unique Mobiles in Brisbane for a lot less than from Telstra and it will come in a Telstra box anyway
About $270 against Telstra $560

www.uniquemobiles.com.au.

Just a satisfied customer

Set network setting to automatic and it will pick up best in area.

Pm me if u want

Then if you want to buy the aerial and force cradle and you will have good coverage Aerial $129 Cradle $75 at Telstra Pacific Fair.
Saw the same aerial at Telstra Morayfield for $179 so look around

Hi Pam and Graham

On our recent trip through the Kimberley and central NT, Yulara (Uluru) had the best NextG reception. There is absolutely no mobile phone cover at the international tourist destination of King's Canyon as yet, nor at most other out of town tourist features. You will only get reception in or near towns and aboriginal settlements that have cover. Check out the maps for NextG and GSM. Towns covered are similar, but NextG range around them is shown as a bigger area.

http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/networks/coverage/index.html

Check out the recent threads on NextG phones - 63718 is one.

The reception will be the same for prepaid and plan phones. We also choose prepaid as our travel is spasmodic. During our recent trip, we purchased a Satellite phone in case of emergency in the outback (there were reasons). Very expensive and we did not need it, but Murphy follows us on our travels, and had we not had it, I'm sure disaster would have struck. I was thankful we had it when we thought we'd broken a spring on the caravan on the great central road. Fortunately it hadn't broken, but bolts had sheared and the spring had come down. Luckily we found the brackets some way back on the road, and had bolts to fit.

I've posted about this on another thread but here it goes again.

I'm in Winton (QLD) and need to make an urgent call to sort out a medical emergency. My AAPT phone won't work so I turn to the 11 adults with the group. There were 11 phones of which the majority were Telstra and 4 or 5 were NextG. Only one worked - the Samsung A411 prepaid! I now own one (despite the fact that I loathe Telstra).

You can pick one up for $100. It's not fancy, the little broomstick aerial does the job and the battery life is quite good.
