Hi all again

I have looked at roof top tents etc but suddenly noticed the 3 dog camper set up, their web site doesnt tell you a real lot. But they do look ok.
They look like they are mostly aloy and light too.
Whats the call from those in the know?
Whats good / bad about these units?

Kind regards
GN

I've had a 3 dog camper now for about 3 years and they are great, no problems at all. It takes longer to remove the cover that to put it up. About 2 minutes.

Hi John M
Thanks for reply
It was actualy your profile that led me to the 3 dog camper in the 1st place.
So i have only had one reply, seems like they are not very popular, but i thought they looked great.
Do you take yours off when at a camp for a few days? is it very difficult? particulary if our bush and ground no so flat?
Regards

I found the 3 dog at the Sydney Camping Show about 3 years ago and they are not very well represented in Sydney.
They normally make a plywood base unit, but I wanted a fully welded aluminium frame with a plywood base, so I made this myself and 3dog made me a king size camper to suit the top of my truck which included all the bows and brackets etc. It fitted perfectly and I have used the camper in some heavy winds and rain and have never been wet.
I think it cost about $1600.00 about 3 years ago(plus the frame). The quality is of second to none and could not be compared with the chinese junk offered by some of the 4wd outlets.

I never take it off the truck as we use the Nissan for travelling trips where we normally have overnight stays and I also carry my boat on top. The Nissan is fully self contained with a galley, lighting, fridge and freezer, gas hot shower, dual tanks etc.

There is another brand "Dingo Dozer" which is also very good and more compact than the 3Dog. About $3,500.00 I think. Doug the guy who makes this is a real larakin, Aussie and all Australian products.
With a car top camper. I find that it is important to keep things compact and within your vehicle so it is easy to pack up and move if you want. We can generally be packed up and move in about 15 to 20 minutes.
I hope this helps.

Hi John M
Many thanks for your information, it is greatly appreciated.

Could you enlighten me a bit about the design of the alumin / plywood structure you built. Is it a sourround type alumin frame with the ply inside it?

Is the ply also the top of the rear storage?

Did you have to build it in a certain way to allow for the camper to be attached?

How thick is the ply and how many cross supports does it have?

I cant see a boat rack on your profile pic? How do you also add the boat to the top?

If you have the boat how do you deploy the camper with the boat on?

I like the idea of being able to pack up so quick.

Kind regards
