Andrew
We have been back for a week after our
Cape York and thought that I would report on our experiences.
It is really a fantastic destination, particularly for us coming from
Melbourne and enjoying the warmth, sun, rivers etc that are warm (didn't see any Crocs).
We did around 10000 k's in the six weeks and spent about $1600 on diesel.
Had a few vehicle problems. Alternator wire broke off and repaired under warranty in
Cairns before Cape trip by Toyota (100s T/D). Shower bracket broke and welded in
Cairns before Cape Trip. New rear shocks in
Weipa. New front Shocks in Siesa. Drove up the OTL and down the bypass roads.
Enjoyed visiting
Vrilya point, Chilli Beach,
Mapoon,
Twin Falls, Seisa,
Bathurst Head. Lots of
places were fantastic.
Probably the highlight was visiting Dal Nixon at Shelburne Bay. Wrote to him before our trip and got permission. Arrived a day early and found him in fine form. He suggested that we go out to the Dunes and spend the nights there and he would accompany us there and show us around. He is a unique character and gave us an ear bashing regarding his politics the first night we were there.
Next day we drove out to Shelburne Dunes and he climbed the Dunes with us and showed us around. Is a fantastic sight but he is the one we will remember more than the dunes.
He is a fair dinkum old bushie with a hell of a lot of stories to tell about his life. Our kids were in awe of him as none of them ( or the adults ) had me anyone like Dal. He asked me to get onto the internet and tell everyone what he is like and not to tell them any bullsh*t. He is happy to have visitors but I don't think you should admit to being a greenie or a politician while you are with him.
On the second day with him, down at the Dunes, he was fantastic to have around and it was great to hear about his days on the dozers, putting in roads, working on the property etc. I would recommend going there to anyone who loves meeting characters - the scenery is the icing on the cake.

Hi Andrew
Sounds like a great trip.
Were the shocks under warrenty also ?
If so why the double failure in such a short period of time ?
Is this a common problem with Toyota shocks.
Regards
John

Our
suspension had been lifted with aftermarket springs on the rear, torsion bar adjustment and new shocks front and rear. They were still under warranty but unfortunately the rear ones are at Dal Nixon's
homestead and I may not get my money back from the after market supplier. They were about 12 months old. The front shocks went in Seisa and I had new ones air freighted up under warranty.
Another vehicle with us, with Toyota genuine shocks had his shocks go too, but his car was 3 yrs old and had done 90000k and his shocks went after
mine did. I think the Toyota ones sound more robust that the aftermarket ones.

Andrew, thanks for sharing your great trip to the topend. We have packed up and ready to head off in 3 weeks from yesterday. It will be new to us, although we are bushies, and yet the challenge is still there to get to see a different area to what we normally take as a holiday. It was a bit tough to see you had vehicle problems, although it is what we expect to have some time or another. We are hoping to cover just a smaller area this time as we only have approx 3 weeks( self employed flexi time). Will let you know where we end up, when we get back. Geoff & Jen

Hi Andrew,
Your trip sounds fantastic. We're off Saturday week and it may be too short notice but would appreciate the contact details for Dal Nixon at as we would like to send him a quick note about possibly visiting also.
Regards,
Leroy

We got his details from Viv Moon's book on
Cape York (I am sure she did more work on the book than Ron). In the 2001/2 edition it is on page 91.
Address is Dal Nixon
PMB 44,
Cairns Mail Centre Qld 4871.
Good luck reading his writing. We sent a stamped and addressed envelope. He is still a grumpy old bugger but we did what he recommended and didnt rush and had a great time. Kids talk about him more than anything else on the trip.

Dal Nixon has changed his tune must be getting mellow with old age.
