Gday all, were about to travel to WA in the next fortnight from Alice Springs. We are wanting to bypass Port August and take the track from NT/SA Boarder to Minnipa (east of Ceduna) and cut off a few hundred KM's. With the recent rains, does anyone know what condition the track is in? Any recent news on this road would be appreciated. thanks.

Sorry, can't answer your question, but what about the Gunbarrell Hwy? Go to Ayers Rock and keep going west......then south west.

Have a good trip.

Thanks for your reply - we'll be leaving the gunbarrell for another time as this is a bit of a flying trip to see the S.W of WA and perth and don't have alot of time - rather spend what time we have in WA not on the nullabor or stuck on the Gunbarrell. The vehicle is a Jeep after all and we don't wish to take our chances.

I am unsure of the exact track or tracks you are referring to.

If you are coming down via Kingoonya to Minnipa, you will have trouble at the moment due to heavy rainfalls recently. But this will probably be okay after a few days unless more rain falls. Check with RTA.

But similar to what Roachie said, take the road to Yulara, then down the Great Central road and come out at Laverton north of Kalgoorlie.

You will require permits to do this of course. Check the permits section under 'Topics' on this forum.

You don't have to go to Minnipa. Save a few miles by going through to Yantanabie via Lake Everard and Hiltaba Station from Kingoonya.
No idea what the roads are like now but used to travel these roads in sedans back in the 60/70's so should have improved since then.
Lovely country thro there.

I think you will find it hard to get permission from Lake Eeverard Station to pass through there now.

We came through there in the late '80's, good water collection at Childara out station (Childara Rockhole).

Good luck with permission if you go that way, it is a good drive, especially if you carry on through the dog fence to Goog's Lakes then head south to Ceduna..

Hi,
A good shorts cut would be to get your last fuel at Glendambo, backtrack a few kilometres and head out on the Kingoonya Road and follow the signs to Lake Everard, Hiltaba then down to Wirrulla, then only a stone through to Ceduna. The rain has been very patchy in that area. I know the owner of Lake Everard Station. They had about 30mm the other week, yet other properties that they own to the south received nothing. You will save a lot of travel and is the quickest route from the Alice to the West.

Cheers

Stephen

Hi Yakodi

If you are taking a flying visit, and don't want to take the Great Central Road (which we went through in September), are you wanting to stay on bitumen?

We took the Glendambo to Wirrulla road in April 2006 and it was very corrugated at the time - other times it can be really good. People go through in sedans.

Gday
Kingoonya to Wirrulla road is usually pretty good, it seems to hold up fairly well in the wet.
Your best bet would be to ring Glendambo and Wirrulla before you leave.

Hi,
From Glendambo you could go through Kingoonya and Tarcoola then take the Googs Track South.
A bit a fun and not too hard.
