Hello Bug,
I bought my GME-TX3440 from Telstat. They are down at Seaford and give good advice & service all sorts of vehicles. I'm very pleased with the unit, and the controls on the mike.
Here's the link:

Make sure you get a tall aerial for bush driving - apart from line-of-sight, height is everything to gain distance for UHF. I am looking at getting another aerial - on the old Prado, I had one mounted on the roof gutter for the bush. It could go up in stages with connectors for each section locked with an Allen Key and it gave good reception. The sections looked like knitting needles stored in the
seat pocket whilst around town and you do need to remember the aerial before you drive into the garage. :-]
If you do any convoy driving, you could be a Km away from the leader especially in dunes so the best reception you can practically manage is important.
Cheers,
Ros.

Aren't the taller aerials, say 9db, normally better in open country & the shorter 4.5 or 6db better in hilly or cluttered terrain?

I bought
mine online at "prestige communications" and got a very good deal.. I got my unit (the old GME TX3200 which was the in thing at the time) with an aerial included and delivered for less than the unit itself was selling for in store.
never had a problem with it and it has done its job for a few years now.
cheers

Bug,
I did a google search on the GME radio's in answer to a post the other day. There are a heap of online deals that include areals and postage. Might be
well worth doing a search if you haven't already done so.
Cheers
Mick

If you have an AUTOPRO store in Melb , check them out , bought a GME 3220 with bonus 670 hand-held , aerial + mount bracket thrown in $349 ,, the 670 hand-held usually retails for $199 alone .
