Hi Willem,

This year I left Desert Queens Baths and via Number 11 and Christies Crossing. Camped near Mt. Hodgson. From there out to Skull Springs Road via a stop at Pearana Rockhole and beyond.

Total distance (GPS) from No11 to Skull Springs Road is 257 kilometres and it took me 9 hours 7 minutes.

Hope that helps.

Cheers
Alan

Damn if that's not acurate. I won't even consider consulting my notes from '07. Was that with or without morning tea Alan? Cheers you two. Mick

Thanks Alan

That is a big help as none of my digital maps show any of those distances.

I see on Natmap 2008 there is a track shown from Skull Springs Road to Upper Carawine Gorge and beyond to the Woodie Woodie road. Have you explored that way? The track is not shown on my old version of Hema digital

Gees Alan,

Didn't you get lost even once ? We certainly did .

I don't know our exact time , but we left Hanging Rock about 8.00am and arrived at Bocrabee Hill just before dark.

Willie.

Hi Willie, yes the time includes being lost, twice!!!

Just trying to find the right rack from No11 was a pain. Also crossing a soil plain east south east of Bocrabee Hill I lost the track for a while.

Willem,

I have outlined three northward tracks from Christies Crossing and made maps for Ozi (or trackranger, I'll have to check)from Google Earth images for most of it. One follows the Eastern side of the Oakover catchment plains to a place I call Bald Hill and then joins the main Woodie Woodie Road north of Mike Mine. The other main route heads west from Christies across the Oakover and swings round Mt Hodgson and heads North. It splits in two about 35 km north of Hodgson, the right fork following the oakover on the eastern side up to Mike Mine and Woodie Woodie, the other taking a north westerly track until it hits the Skull Springs Road. I will send the KMZ files for GE tonight and any Ozi maps I have.

My wife and I did the track from Skull Springs into upper Carawine Gorge about 8 years ago....it used to be marked by a very old faded white drum.....I think I have the GPS coordinates in an old GPS.

the track was very overgrown and after upper Carawine continues downstream but obviously must move away because of the cliffs as you approach Lower Carawine..... if i recall correctly one of my old maps shows that in theory we could have continued and come out the other end but I would need to relook at my old maps to refresh that recollection more clearly...I am a bit hazy on it.....we didnt do it as we were on our own and a liitle short of time.

we were unable to drive close to the edge of the river at that point and we had to walk into upper Carawine...I remember the walk as clearly as yesterday because of a scrub bull that caused us some issues on the walk!...I have been a cattle farmer for most of my life and like everyone we have our experiences from time to time....but that was an experience that we did not need....on our own and out there

approaching from the Woodie Woodie road the closest track that we could find was into the old Cooma stockyards (think that was the name)...from there we eventually got to the river by heading downstream but the xing was not something you would tackle on your own.........and so we didnt

so i guess in summary what I am saying is that I have been in as far as the river from Woodie Woodie road but not crossed...the xing was not real flash and I think from memory it may have not been straight over but more like along part of the river..I didnt like the look of it and didnt do it..........from the Skull Springs Road we have not driven to the waters edge and so therefore not viewed the xing from that side

Dont know if that is of any help...a few years gone and now of course a mother of a flood that took the trees out of Carawine a couple of years back

I am not home for a few days and so if you want me to see if I have that GPS reading or for me to try and see if my maps confirm or conflict my memory let me know

cheers

bungarra

Thanks for that info, Bungarra. Much appreciated.

We camped at Carawine Gorge in 2006 after coming in from Marble Bar.

As we are going to spend some time in those parts I have been scouring the maps and saw that the track is still marked on Natmap 2008(for what its worth..lol). I surmise that the flood of 04? would have done severe damage to any crossing but it might be worth having a look as we have allocated enough time to take in most of the sights. Going to spend at least a month in the area between Rudall and Nullagine.

I will not need a GPS reading as I should be able to find the track with my paper and electronic mapping. Thanks for the offer anyway.

If your going through Nullagine a handy bloke to talk to is Harvey Hamersley who is the East Pilbara Shires rep there.
He has been in the area for some years .Knows the area pretty well. Can be contacted on 08 91762034 and could be of assistance if required.Doesnt mind a beer either.

As an aside, we went through RRNP August last year, but missed the Billy Dunns and Jinawanura Caves. We will return shortly and would like to know where they are. Presumably somewhere south of Christmas Pool?
