I was talking to a old bloke yesterday about cylclone
' ALTHEA' that hit
townsville many moons ago and
he was telling me after the cyclone went, he walked
into his back yard and there was a sheet of roofing
iron embeded in the ground,,sticking out about a
foot..
When he finally got it out it was four foot long !!!
What i want to know is.....has anyone have some
'storm' or cyclone photos they can post here...
or even an experience they can share..???

Darrell, I have lived in
Cairns since 1961, I missed the 56 cyclone and did not see or be in one till 1987, "Winifred". That was a new thing for me. I live in a good solid QHC house, it did shake a bit during that one. In
Cairns we have not really had a direct cyclone. We had " Joy in 90, although it was big it stayed off the coast for 3 days blowing hard. we had no power for 3 days and no
water or sewrage. All th other cyclones this way were either north or south of us and only got the side of them, but some were awesome and some were nothing to talk about. I have some photsos but I will have to look for them, I cant remember where I put them.
Try the search I said in the other post.

G'day Darrell,
I was in the RAAF in
Townsville during Althea. Cars in carparks surfaced with crusher dust were all sand blasted on one side, even the glass. One VW had a gash in the engine cover, just like a tin opener had done it. Besser block walls were just tipped over on the ground, as if you could just stand them up again. Roofs were ripped off and the roofing tin and red insulation was draped over power lines for
miles. The whole city was a mess for weeks. Houses were demolished, nothing left but the floor on high blocks and furniture just sitting there. There were really quite some amazing and strange sights.
Sorry can't find any photos, but see this link

I was doing national Service based in
Sydney in December 1971 when Althea hit
Townsville. All the tradies from around the country were mobilised and sent up there doing repairs. I have a lot of memories from the place but no photo's. One of the unusual sights that I recall was looking across the backyards of about 10 houses and all the clotheslines were bent over in line with each other in true military precission. The area was Military housing estate.
I think that the base we were staying at was Lavarack Barracks or something similar and that seemed to have escaped any damage except for a phone box where we could phone home for free. LOL Needless to say, it was very
well patronised.

I was running the pub on
Daydream Island when Althea hit.
It ripped the verandah off the hotel and threw it 100 metres out to sea. It picked up a Cabin Cruiser and threw it 20 metres up on the rocks.
The windows at the resort were made of some sort of plastic and bent with the wind but never bleep tered. We stayed out of sight in the bunkers downstairs.
I can't remember if I took photos.

Darrell. We got larried up on the
Atherton Tablelands. We live direct West from
Innisfail about 30k as the Crow Flies. I can stand on the
hill just up the road and see the coast near
Innisfail. Lots of damage and I did take 100s of photos. My job was to record and claim cyclone damage. What amazes me is that is only ever mentioned as
Innisfail when you hear of it. We were in the eye the same time
Innisfail was. Not as much house damage up here but houses are not as close together. Massive amounts of tree and Power line damage. It took over six months of constant work to clear away the trees and there is still many areas where trees still lay. We were lucky it moved so quick, if it had not the damage would have been a lot worse. The wind was tremendous the noise hard to speak over - thankfully houses are built to strict Cyclone Ratings - if the wind found a fault in construction it did not take long to break it apart. Might get around and dig up the photos, have them buried deep around here somewhere. Cheers Tony

Google Cyclone George and you should be able to pull up some photos of the demolition job it did in 2007 on a construction village 100km INLAND from
Port Hedland. Was still a Category 4 at that point.
