I’ve just had a call from a
young Korean bloke’s boss. The
young bloke doesn’t speak much English, apparently, and is planning on setting off tomorrow with a few mates on a road trip in a normal
sedan. From the
Gold Coast to
Alice Springs, down to
Melbourne and back up through
Sydney. He’s taking 3 weeks off.
Was it do able, and did I think it was too far too fast. The
young bloke has little idea of how big the country is. Did I think he should have a sat phone or something?
I won’t go into detail about my response, but what a guy! I wish I’d have had him as a boss!
I know some would say he should butt out, but I think otherwise.
If you’re a boss do you show the same concern or are the lives of your workers totally their business?

Yep, I do the same with my people.
Can't always pay them top dollar, but I can do little things for them.
Make sure they get time off for family stuff.
Work at home some days.
Some times you get employees that just want to take, but most appreciate the gesture and willing to give a bit back too.
Being a small business helps to be flexible too with out some feeling they are missing out, or getting done.
Some of my best friends are the people I work with.

I have to be good to them, they need to let me go on holidays, and run the office while I am away, otherwise I don't get any trips in. :o)
Naw, they are a good team.
Trying to work out what happens next year if it goes pear shaped, and not much work.
Always found in the past that getting the paint brushes out works
well. When we get about half way through painting a wall in the office, and everything is packed away, an urgent job always comes in.

Hi Footy
A good boss will want to see his good workers come back.
A great boss will see that his workers are going to have a safe holiday.
Lets say 3000k in 3 wks, he'll see so many things he wished he had taken more time to see. No doubt you gave him the thumbs up and more :))

You are right - bosses like that are great.
I used to be able to sneak a bit of that sort of flexibility for my staff, but in a Big Australian company there was a limit, but don't think anyone ever let me down when I could help them somehow.
Off thread a bit, the naivety of people from overseas who don't do their research, reminds me of a couple of stories:
1. A Japanese bloke, on his own, in a rental that he had hired in
Sydney, waved us down just east of the
SA/WA border on the Nullabor. "How far is it to
Perth? When can I get petrol next?" He had driven the rental west, asked at
Port Augusta which road to
Perth, and kept expecting it to appear over the horizon. Was a bit fazed when we suggested he had a day or three yet. We advised him to get the Nullabor booklet they hand out at the road houses so he had an idea.
2. At Mt Ive Station in the
Gawler Ranges, the owner talked of many cyclists with almost no English riding push bikes up into the
Gawler Ranges,
miles from anywhere. When asked what they would do for
water, they would point to the huge lakes on the map - salt pans all.

Max have encountered similar stories from all over. It still didn't prepare me for the 4wd on CY with 9month preg wife and two toddlers, who'd done a radiator.
They had two (or was it one?) softdrink bottles of
water with them...but plenty of beer! The nearest
creek was around 20K away...
