Thanks to all who gave advice about skirting around
Sydney using the M2 and M7. It was fantastic, pity we don't have roads like that in Qld. Didn't even mind paying the tolls, the e-tag was great.
Thanks

Mate!
If you had tried to fight you way through on the so called Cumberland Highway you would have really torn your hair out. That debacle of a so called highway must be the cause of a huge number of "in car" domestics.

The old Cumberland is still quicker than the M7/M2 in non peak hour times.

At least you are not travelling at break neck speed and can see a bit of
Sydney from the out skirts.
GPS set with out the Tolls will take you this way.
Nice drive.
The Director of traffic control in the front office {Passenger
seat} enjoyed being able to sight see with out map reading.
Pleased you had a good trip.
Cheers

Believe what you will.
When driving from
Canberra to
Newcastle and back and I have tested them a number of times since the M7 opened - M7/M2 is 16km longer than the Cumberland. Off peak, the Cumberland consistently comes up just under 5 minutes quicker.
Peak - period different equation - Cumberland takes far longer and is a pain.

The NSW Gestapovernment still does not have a draft plan or proposal on how to link the F3 to the M2 !!!
All the semi-trailers wanting to bypass
Sydney have go through the traffic lights on teh Cumberland Hwy - and the accident rate there shows the price we have to pay for government inaction.

Sorry!
I've lost you here. Admittedly there is a missing link between the F3 and the M2, a relatively short piece of Pennant Hills Road.
However the majority of heavy transport vehicle still bypass Cumberland Highway by way of the M2 to M7.

Sorry, but one of the pitfalls of living in a city !!
I live on the central coast and when I need to travel south, the only downer is Pennant Hills Rd.....and thats in non peak hour !!
I would never travel the old ring rd 7 route if only because of the traffic lights.....so much more relaxing on the M7 ( especially towing !! )
