Could anyone please advise the easiest and most suitable tracks to take for towing a fully loaded camper trailer from the Thompson Dam to O'Tooles Flat??
I have looked at Merrington's track, then Junction Track and Donnelly Creek but are unsure if all of these tracks are easy dirt tracks or harder.
If anyone can advise the condition/s or recommend something better I would appreciate it.

I drove down Merringtons Track from Walhalla Rd 6 weeks or so ago as far as Merringtons Flat, and then used Junction Track to get onto Donnelly Creek Rd and then back around to Walhalla Rd. The most difficult section (and I don't think it will cause you problems, although I have no experience of towing a camper trailer) is the climb up Junction Track after passing through the Aberfeldy River. Donnelly Creek Rd is the better quality road to get you in, but is not as direct. Looking at the map you will avoid that little steepish section if you turn off onto Donnelly Creek Track anyway. Other than it being narrow, there is no reason not to go down Merringtons Track. You have to ford the Aberfeldy River (twice) but these are simple shallow fords with stoney bottoms. I cannot comment on the Donnelly Creek Track section as I've never been to O'Tooles Flat.

Have DSE reopened O'Tooles Flat? I read earlier this year it was closed due to damage from idiots tearing it up in their cars.

Hi Tim - Thanks for the advice.
I should have mentioned that our camper is an on road trailer, not off road - this is the reason for dirt tracks only.
Would you say these tracks are just dirt? Is there a need for low range on any of them?
I am to believe DSE have opened it back up. It was under water from the floods there about a yr ago.
Donnelly Creek Track and Donnelly Creek Road - I can only see the road on the map. Where is the track please?
I am in a GQ so shouldnt have too much trouble up hills, just provided they are easy dirt tracks.
If you could advise on the above, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks again for your time.

The Rooftop map shows Donnelly Creek ROAD (roughly following the Aberfeldy river) turning into Donnelly Creek TRACK (closely following Donnelly Creek) at the intersection with Junction Track.

Both Merringtons Track and Donnelly Creek Road are just dirt/gravel roads - albiet skinny ones in parts. Junction Track and Donnelly Creek Track are shown on the Rooftop map as 4WD tracks.

I don't have any experience with towing - so I'm sorry but I just cant advise on whether the conditions are suited or not to towing either variety of trailer.

I was in low range for the Junction track section - but that doesn't mean other drivers wouldn't just do it in high range - I just prefer the control of low range in these sorts of conditions, even if using 3rd and 4th gear.

Perhaps you could unhitch the trailer at Merringtons Flat and then check out the tracks before proceeding to O'Tooles if you can't get any better advice?

The easiest route is clearly coming in from Walhalla Road down Donnelly Creek ROAD past Toombon Mine, and then turning left onto Donnelly Creek TRACK at the intersectio of Junction Track. You'll just do a few extra Km's to get there - perhaps 8Km or so further?
