Hi everyone,
firstly Merry Xmas!!
My GQ patrol has developed strange wear on the front tyres. Ive got Goodyear MTR's that have done 60,000Kms - still plenty of tread on them. the outside of the trye is wearing much more than the innerside of the tyre, and there is a fair amount of unevenness in the wear on the outer lugs in that every second one is wearing more. the rears are wearing evenly.
I dont have any shake/shimmer/or vibration in the steering wheel when driving to indicate something is out of balance.
Does the wear indicate Ive got a front
suspension issue? the car has ARB springs on it so that adds a 2.5 inch lift (I think).
Im going to rotate the tyres to help even the wear out, but does anyone know what causes this wear profife to occur?
many thanks for any advise.
regards
Bryan

suggest front
wheels are towed in and also shocks could be worn

Any more than 2" lift affects the caster angles and can cause that type of wear suggest a wheel alignment by someone who has experience with lifted 4wds

Possible a shocker issue as outlined above. There was a very similar post within the last 2 months. Will try and find it.
Cheers

I hope its not a shockie issue - I only replaced the old OME ones and put on Koni's maybe 2 years ago :-(
I did a bit more searching on the web and found it is most likely linked to the camber angle - which I guess would change when I put on the longer ARB springs many years ago.. I do recall the BFG's I had on previously wore more on the outside, but not as much as the MTR's are.

its worth the effort, i noticed
mine had worn after only doing a 2000 km trip. It was aligned when they put the new tyres on but was done by a kid i found out . cheers

Your tyres have "scalloping". Its normal for tyres with an aggressive mud terrain pattern on the front end.
My tyre dealer talked me out of M/T for that very reason

I have a similar issue with my MTRs on my GU.The wear is not on the edges but there is uneven wear on the tread. Some blocks are worn while blocks next to them are not.Shock absorbers are in very good condition.people i ask cant work it out.

Rotate, Rotate, Rotate.
After many years I found a tyre guy I trust. He explained to me the value of rotating tyres. I tried it 'cause I trust him, I trust him 'cause he's right.
I have always thought that if my tyres wear out unevenly fronts wear quicker than rear or vice versa I would only be buying two tyres at a time.
The tyre guy I trust explained to me how that theory is OK on a road car with light tyres and
well maintained
suspension that never really works too hard. Once you increase the weight of the
wheels and tyres the wear on the front particularly will be very uneven and can lead to an out of balance situation. The longer you leave it the worse it gets.
By rotating tyres, front to back, you square off the tyres that were worn unevenly on the front and they last more than twice as long. So I now rotate and I get the results I was promised.
Of course if you are already rotating your tyres regularly, then I haven't got a clue.
Merry Christmas

I'm with you, I have
mine done every 10,000 Km and add the spares in so do a 6 wheel rotation.
I have no problem with un even tyre wear because they all wear out at around 45-50000Km .. :-)
Cheers

With larger tread blocks, you can get tread movement, which is normal, and often can look like incorrect toe adjustment.
Best bet is to ensure wheel align is ok, tyre pressures are ok, shocks doing their job, (usually the scolloping with shocks worn is larger than just one tread block as you have mentioned), and rotate them side to side to reverse the rotation.
then put them to the rear.
this will even up the blocks, and even out the wear.
But once you have worn your tyres, they will contunue to wear unevenly, rotating them prolongs their life, and allows for them all to wear at an even rate.
Cheers

Interesting, my previous tyres (Cooper ST's) had this issue on my Prado. My current tyres BFG MT's do not....
I rotate every 5000km & the MT's tyres are currently @ 55,000km without issue.
Sadly it may be due to 98% highway use & very few roundabouts....

Which goes to show its most likely a tyre issue, and not from the vehicle.
The way a car is driven will also have a large bearing on how the tyres wear, but all things being equal, this type of tread block wear is just due to the tyre and how it behaves.
Pressures can help it a bit.
have any of you noticed that with tractor tyres, with the large bar tread, have this wear pattern too if there run on bitumen instead of just dirt/ rock.
