Dual Battery setup

Firstly I'd like to thank all the contributors to the various forums as the info contained in them has been an outstanding source of knowledge that has saved me countless dollars and time. I've just upgraded my vehicle from an old troopy to a 100 series cruiser and am now starting again in building up my rig.

So to my question ...
Assuming I have a dual battery system installed with a Projecta 100amp isolator, what happens when I install a third battery in my camper and charge via an anderson plug (connected the the aux batt). Will the aux and CT battery equalise when connected and then charge at the same rate??

Next question will be how to charge the CT batt whilst camped up - Solar vs Gennie ... but that's for another time !!!

Cheers

Hi Thunder,
I have dual batteries in my patrol and a battery in the camper trailer.
deep cycle batteries charge slower than cranking batteries due to their internal construction - they are made to do 2 different jobs.
so whenever your projecta solenoid connects the 2 car batteries they will equalise as they charge.
when you add the 3rd battery it is the same - all batteries will equalise as they charge - this of course depends on the smart solenoid and how it manages when the extra battery is allowed to conenct for charging.

I did find a great article (with pictures) on the EO website on the different way to connect up dual/tripple battery systems. this is well worth reading.

hope this helps.

regards

A good way to be sure is to use the Sterling Pro Split R which is new and has a nil volt drop back feed protection and overvolt protection and gives you two or three seperate charge outlets which independently controlls the charge.
It is ideal for the 4x4 with a trailer or van but cable size is critical as in any system to offset voltage drop.

Ian - went to your website for details on the Sterling gear but got "saved" by my phishing filter. Suggest check it out and get yourself off the phishing list.

Cheers

Hi John & Val
Thanks for that but I think you will find it is not correct as the there was an old Zen Cart shopping cart that was infiltrated by someone somewhere and Netports Australia my server corrected the problem but also closed the Zen Cart and installed the OS Commerce site.
I take your post serious even so and I will check it myself to see as the gateway in the public domain area they used before is now locked by me every time I access and use the site myself.
If you like I can send you a brochure on the product for information purposes only.

Hi John & Val
The date listed was 4/07/08 Miller Smiles & Co.
We closed the loophole in the Zen Cart but found that a complete website was linked to a picture in the public domain that every time we deleted it a new one was installed.
Netports Australia then contacted Miller Smiles and advised them and then on my asking they listed that the site was 100% safe as they had taken steps that deleted the false website immediately upon its renewal.
This frustrated the crooks severely but it also was not good as on site commerce sites were the target and thousands were hit worldwide due to the loophole.

In August 2008 we deleted the Zen cart completely and upgraded to OS Commerce.

If you go to the site and someone asks for details and money just send it to me instead as its better to get dudded by someone you can find than some faceless crook somewhere else in the world.

Merry Xmas
Ian

Hi Ian,

Sorry to discuss this one publicly (and divert the thread from an interesting discussion), but I can't see a way to send you a private member message. My browser (Firefox) won't let me access your siite - email me at johnandval@exemail.com.au and I can give you more details.

Have a good Christmas

John

John
I am pleased you did as it makes me aware of how people may think and I can see it as a problem that I will address with Miller Smiles ASAP.
If thier posting cannot be modified to show that a correction has been done then the OS Commerce site will have to be modified by using a different URL.
They could not even get the map right it shows we are in Sydney and that Sydney is located in New Zealand.
An email is coming.
Thank you again.

Because of the extra resistance in the long wiring, the CT battery will charge more slowly.

If there is a constant load in the CT like a fridge drawing 10 amps, then the CT battery may never charge fully.

Equalising of charge when two batteries are connected together is a myth.

Hi Mike,
the batteries will equalise voltages -the lower voltage one will drag the other one down
they will then charge at their respective rates.
sorry i should have explained that better.

Mike,
You say: "If there is a constant load in the CT like a fridge drawing 10 amps, then the CT battery may never charge fully"

Question:
If *all batteries* are wired in parallel with suitably sized battery cable to eliminate Voltage loss, would not the fridge be drawing it's load from *all batteries* connected with-in this battery system ??
(Assuming ALL batteries are identical)

Thanks all for the responses, I can see now that the Aux and CT battery will equalise to a degree (taking into account they are different batteries for now, voltage drop & current draw). The main cranking battery is protected by the Projecta isolater so I think all will be good. Cheers again.
