Firstly thanks for the responses on what to take for the first trip. Much appreciated

Looking at a 2nd hand Land Cruiser <100Km late 2005 HDJ100R GXL. I have been told to keep in mind a possible IFS control arm fault. Thanks Willem for the hint. But the LC is worth it if the fix or mod is economical and proven safe.

I saw a support bracket from ARB. Cannot find any official recall and of couse the salesman says...... You know waht I mean.

Is there a fix or mod around to make sure they do not break?
Is it worth replacing/upgrading the IFS etc and any idea of a ball park cost?

Phil and Merry Christmas

Some of the earlier IFS 100 series had a problem, I bought a second hand one early this year,2000 model.

The guy that does my suspension fitted a kit that strengthens the control arms, when he adjusted the height in the front end.

The kit was about $50.00 and it took about an hour to fit, this was with the torsion bars already out in order to adjust the height.

The whole job which included rear heavy duty King springs on the rear, the front lifted to standard and then another 36mm, the kit and a wheel alignment, was $500.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Steve.

Thanks Steve. I gather that when you say early series you (I hope) are talking about before the 2005 ones.

Cheers

Phil Autocraft in Geelong have the 100 series front suspension sorted tweaking the torsion bars up, welding a support bracket to the control arms & using a diff drop kit to maintain CV angles. This system (combined with shocks & rear coils) is excellent for heavily loaded outback trips proving very reliable.
Cheers Craig...............

Thanks for that Craig. Its a bit far to Geelong. We are in Canberra so Canberra would be ideal and Sydney is second. Don't need heavy loading. No van (done enough of that) nor trailer at this stage.

Read about the welding approach somewhere yesterday also. Cheers and thanks

I read in the 4wd monthly that it was only certain Vin numbers in 2002-2003 that were affected by the robot welder that went mad.
You probably dont need to worry unless you are modifying the suspension.

I have a 2005 and wont be doing anything to the front and Toyotas advice was you dont need it unless you go mad at the front.

There was no recall for this.

What are you thinking of replacing it with. If solid axle look at heaps of money. Would be cheaper to buy one standard.

The earlier solid front chassis are about 45mm narrower than the IFS model so there is the first problem.

Im towing a 2.8tonne van and am not worried about the control arms at all.

Also understand it was only certain VIN numbers with this problem. Had mine done in any case when I had the ATS4X4 suspension mod done. Included the ARB bracket and control arm weld.
