HJ61 Turbo leaks oil

Howdy,

The turbo on my 1986 HJ61 seems to leak some oil and it doesn't "sing" that loud any more. When the engine has run for a while, I can see some drops of oil coming out of the hose that is connected to the turbo output.

What would be the best solution money wise?
Buying a new and maybe bigger turbo, or have this one rebuilt?

Thanks

I assume it is not a 12HT engine, but a turboe'd 2H?
Dont want to be the "doomsday" bloke, but I think you will more than likely find the oil is coming from the breather pipe which goes from the rocker cover to the inlet side of the turbo.
I had one which as well as leaking from around the rubber turbo outlet pipe, also leaked past the inlet manifold gasket.
The turbo was OK, but the rings worn to the extent a large volume/pressure of blowby was occurring.

The first thing I would have done is an "injectorclean". Least that's what i think it is called. The machine is connected between the fuel supply line and the rest of the fuel system and the tank fuel goes first through the machine where it is mixed with an injector cleaner and then goes through as normal for an hour or so at fast idle. It removes all the gunk, carbon from everywhere including the piston rings. I had it done on our Volvo v40 turbo which was using oil and now uses none! Cost about $200 but it was worth it. If you are in Sydney then MM me and I will tell more.

I had a 12H-T and used to get a bit of oil come down the breather and down to the turbo that way. It used to cause occasional blue smoke on startup. From memory, I redirected the hose in an upward direction, so the oil wouldn't travel down the breather, but you could also try a catchcan to see if that is your problem.

The occasional blue smoke sounds about right.
I'll see if I can mess around with it a bit.
And trying that cat-scan you mentioned (oops, catch can)
It doesn't really bother me, and it still uses more fuel then oil, so no rush.

Ooohh, and furph, it is a 12H-T not a 2H.
This is an HJ61RG from the day it was born.

Fair enough.
My assumption was based on the fact that the 12HT turbo piping is a better setup than most A/M ones.
I have to drain oil out of the breather pipe on my 300tdi Disco every 6 months or so.
It "dips down then up" and works like a catch can setup.
