Wanting to drive tomorrow from
Mudgee NSW to
Terrigal NSW via the Hunter Valley. Need to know how long this takes (Small baby on board) The directions here want me to go via
Sydney and won't come up with anything going the top way. Any one have an idea please?
Cheers Mac

I go from
Bathurst through
Rylstone the
Bylong Valley to Lemon Tree Passage two or three times each year, there is a stretch of gravel road and there is very little traffic until you get to
Singleton.
Brings you out of the
Bylong Valley at Sandy Hollow and takes you down through Denman, Jerrys Plains and bypasses
Singleton.
From
Mudgee you could go down through Woolar and that will bring you out on the
Bylong Valley Rd, I did that once about 4 years gao, small dirt road somewhere between
Mudgee and Woolar that was abit rough, but it saves a heck of a lot of time.

The
Bylong Rd has had a lot of work done on it over the last few years , so its a excellent run through to sandy Hollow now, It's the way i'd go as
well.

Depends if you want the fastest way or not ??
I live on the northern end of the CC and I would go via
Lithgow if I wanted the fastest way..
If you are going to
Terrigal that would be the fastest ..from
Lithgow to
Richmond..along
Richmond rd to the M7...then M2...then Pennant Hills rd..then F3 ..then turn off at Kariong..then head straight east to
Terrigal..
If going the other way and you don't want any dirt...then head straight North up to the Golden Hwy...turn right and head towards
Singleton...then Branxston,Cessnock...then the F3 and to Kariong that way..

For this area it is better to use the
NRMA travel planner. I think it gives better relative times. Google maps also misses out on a lot of local roads. You will not get the changed route to snap onto the Kerrabee road. For the default route you just type the start and destination into the boxes. For deviations you click on the Adv Route Go button and it will allow you up to 6 way points.
The default route (through
Sydney) is 314 km or 4:28
Via Merriwa it is 360 km or 4:44
Via Kerrabee it is 320 km or 5:05
These last two routes turn you south at Mt Thorley and bring you south through
Wollombi and Buckertty (good roads.) If you want to travel the highway and express way, insert Maitland for your way point and the route comes out at 374 km or 5:02 (5H 02M.)

I live in
Terrigal and have done that trip several times. The best route is through Merriwa. What the trip planner doesn't take into account is the
Sydney traffic. Avoid it. As you come through Denman, either head for
Singleton and then Broke or you can get to Broke via Jerry's Plains which is a bit trickier for directions. From there, to Cessnock, and the rest is easy. (The old route thru
Bucketty is nice but lots of bends in the road which isn't that wide and also what you have to watch are barriers that the council have put up at
Wollombi, so if you're towing avoid that, too.) The Merriwa -
Singleton - Broke - Cessnock- F3 run is really hassle free with hardly any traffic lights. Depending on whether you're towing or not and how you drive you would easily do that in 5 hours without stops. Enjoy
Terrigal - I'm off up north coast tomorrow.

btw, take the Tuggerah (that's the 2nd Wyong turnoff) exit from the F3 and the rest is signposted.
