Bridport, on NE coast, has pleasant little CP - "bushy" atmosphere in parts, sites overlooking great bay. From there, we took the gravel roads east through Gladstone and Ansons Bay, to St Helens. This avoided big hills. White Beach Tourist Park at Nubeena is a great base to visit Port Arthur area, and also to explore the whole Tasman Peninsula, which has lots of interest. Hobart, we stay at Treasure Island CP at Berriedale, in northern suburbs. It is nothing flash, but a convenient location - good Derwent River views from the higher sites. Is a great little CP at Dover and this is good base for exploring all round those parts; from there we easily managed to drive south to Cockle Creek, then walk to South Cape bay and back, as a day trip. Ditto walks in Hartz Nat Park. If you are going that way, recommend NP CP at Mt Field as a base - from there can explore Lake Pedder/Strathgordon, Scotts Peak as day drives, also go up Mt Field - some good walks if interested.

To the north and south of St Helen's there are free camp sites in wonderful sea side locations. Eco toilets only, but hot shower and water available at St Helen's marina. Camps Australia Wide gives you a good selection.

Snug caravan park south of hobart ,through Kingston and Margate is a good location for homebase to do a lot of day trips around the huon and channel areas. Is only 25 mins from the centre of Hobart .
Only one CP on Bruny Island open now,I'd call first. Right across road from Adventure Bay beach, which on a nice day is sensational.

I was talking to a couple of 'mainlanders' in Wayatinah CP (sensational place on the way to Queenstown) and they'd been having trouble finding places to stay on the East coast, as everyone was holidaying with their kids. Might have calmed down a bit now.Would recommend planning ahead if the East is your thing.

Safe travels.
