G'day all

The wife and I are back in Tasmania for a month. The last time we were here was in July last year.

We have been at St Helens for only two days and have almost been involved in two head on collisions.

One with a motor bike and the other with a car.

Both were completely on our side of the road comming out of a blind bend.

Both only just got back to their side of the road in time.

Thank goodness for ABS brakes. They got a work out both times, and no I was not going very fast, which was probably what saved us.

Having got that of my chest St Helens is a great place. We will be here two weeks and then move to Nubeena ( near Port Arther) for two weeks.

We are staying at Binalong Bay. A lovely place, but because the wife has the car at work I cannot go fishing as the fishing spots are not within walking distance of the place we are at.

Still there is a good walking track around Grants Lagoon.

Didn't ya know??
They're having a "test run" over there..........................
Since we are becomong more and more "Americanised" with every passing day, it is only logical that we should drive on the RH side of the road, right?
So, with this in mind, Tassie has been chosen as the "test bed"...

All cars & motorcycles (pushbikes too!) will travel on the RH side of the road for a trial period of 6 months............

If the trial is deemed to be successful after this time, then trucks and buses are to follow suit.......................

In areas frequently visited by international tourists, you need to be VERY careful and vigilant for such driving 'mistakes'. In NZ many head on collisions occur in the vicinity of ports of arrival in vehicles driven by Europeans and Americans. Stay alert.

Had never even considered that, thanks for the
'heads up'.
Possibly explains some of the nervous looking hire cars around some of our mountain roads, only thought of tourists from the flat lands to our north having troubles with corners.
cheers

I was down there last year driving from Launceston to Hobart following two tourists in a hire car that kept straying to the wrong side of the road, especially on corners and varying between 70 and over 100 in a 100 zone.

It was scary watching them. My phone was out of coverage or I wild have whistled up the coppers. I got past them after two scary attepts and was glad to see them disappear in the rear view mirror.

It is not only visitors that drive on the right hand side of the road , here in Alcoa country in Sth West Vic a lot of the locals do so...mainly park the car facing oncoming traffic...they have to drive on the right hand side of the road to do it...beats me why , probably to lazy to walk across the road....and they also probably do not realise that their car is uninsured whilst it is in that position and that they can be booked for the priviledge...just a pity that a few more do not get booked....cheers

Yes foreign tourists are a worry in NZ for doing that.
However here in QLD its prevalent as well. No wonder people are obese they are too lazy to walk across the road.

In NZ if you park facing the incorrect way on the wrong side of the road and a cop catches you, not only do you get a parking fine but a careless driving conviction as well as that is the offence for driving on the wrong side of the road.
Saw a campervan parked like that in the middle of the main shopping block in Dunedin. They would have been in deep poo as the parking gestapo got it towed. LOL

$60 parking fine $150 towage Pound charges.

They were lucky a cop didnt get there first would have been even more.

When in Rome ............................

I do think that in both countries the rental companies have a lot to answer for in that they dont instruct the hirers about rules and driving customs especially here relating to 4 wd usage.

They have adopted an idea in that they put a sign ON DASH OR SUN VISOR with a big arrow and a caption that says DRIVE ON LEFT on it.
Only good if you read it I guess.

In saying all that its not only here, I guess it equally applies in countries where they drive on the 'öther"side.

I scared s*** out of myself one day in Anaheim when I turned left out of a driveway to be faced with 4 lanes of rapidly approaching traffic.
Luckily I was driving a rather grunty Camaro so one handbrake turn and hit the gas and we woke up.

Was much more careful after that.

Bruce,
I don't think it is any more prevalent in Alcoa country in Sth West Vic than any other country town.

BooBoo,

That bunch of cousin botherers have been running the left hand drive trials with right hand drive cars for at least 20 years I know about.

The first time I went there was that long ago and nearly got cleaned up several times in the two weeks.

Last time I was there was about 18 months ago, nothing had changed. They are still coming around blind corners on the wrong side of the road.

Works fine if you get two locals coming toward each other, they just pass left hand door handle to left hand door handle.

The system falls over when someone like you and I turn up that doesn't know how it operates!

I was in the pub in Burnie one night talking to a local. He says to me, "ere, you've got a it of an accent. You're not from round these parts are ya?" "What country ya from?"

My daughter came back from 2 weeks in tassie last month - had exactly same experience as you. Two near miss head-ons only avoided by evasive action of her's and other vehicles.

Some years back, same daughter was knocked off her pushbike by a rental vehicle - freshly hired by an overseas tourist who hopped off the plane 2 hours earlier - he looked the wrong way at an intersection.

Lookout William

The wife and I will be over your way early in March.

So if you see a good looking fat bloke jumping out from behind power poles you will know who it is.

For a while I thought they might not have liked my good looks.

But, seeing that a few of my mainland bro's have had the same experience I will try and fit in with local customs.

I am going for a walk now, and will hide behind a power pole and jump out at the cars as they drive past.

Hangon, with a gut like mine it will have to be a big pole!

"Both were completely on our side of the road comming out of a blind bend. "

After a few experiences like that - and cars pulling out in front of me, I now drive with headlights on (low beam) all the team.

The sooner these idiots see you, the more chance they have of getting on the right side of the road again.

No sure about Tassie but here in SA, 2 people die a year on the roads due to intenational drivers on the wrong side of the road (police gave me that statistic).

I was driving south about 2 hours North of Adelaide when I came around a blind corner. A German tourist in his imported LHD 4x4 was on the wrong side of the road. I swerved into the gravel and slammed the brakes on (had nowhere else to go as there were trees/poles on my left). He did the same by instinct and we had a head on smash. Lucky I was driving a bit slower than 110kph. I had my lights on. Only one was seriously hurt. They had been here 6 weeks touring Australia after landing in Melbourne.

How do you stop it happening? Plain driver error caused my crash, namely inattention.
