Do I turbo my 1HZ 80 series landcruiser.

The motor (Diesel) has done 350,000, I have had it since 310,000. It has been serviced on time. (as far as I can tell)

I am looking to get a camper trailer and I have to cart gear for a wife and 2 girls (Young now but as they get older the amount of gear will grow(hair dryers, nail kits, showers, baths, toilets, hair dressers, their bedroom, their friend bedrooms, You get the idea).

My landcruiser does drop down to 90 kph when on the black stuff when you get a long step hill (EG. Western Hwy going to Ballarat)

Every one I have asked that has done it is enjoying the extra power but 350,000 on the clock an I asking for a Blown engine?

Thanks David

Many of the turbo shops will not touch them after 200000 or want to do a compresssion test before installation.
IMO you are better off letting it die gracefully.

You might want to get your pump and injectors checked if its losing power on the highway

Hi David,
I had a Denco Turbo Kit and new exhaust fitted here in Mudgee at 315,000. Local installer checked the motor out carefully first and it has never looked back.. Far cleaner exhaust and the extra power makes a huge difference when towing. Mate has aftermarket turbo 80 and over 550,000 on clock and still going strong. Get your motor checked out and if OK go for it.

Hi David,
We turboed our 1HZ at about 140000 kms and I wish we had done it earlier. Get yours checked by a competent diesel mechanic first though, especially the valve clearances and pump.
The performance difference will amaze you. I would also suggest replacing the exhaust system with a 2.5 in one to match the turbo outlet pipe.
If you are in Sydney you are welcome to drive mine before you decide. let me know. Good luck. Ian

My 1993 1HZ 80 was turboed at about 200,000Kms by ARB and it was like getting a new one; 50% increase in power.
It's now at 300,00kms and has never missed a beat.
Go for it.

I'm interested to know, what kind of $$ would a turbo kit be for a 1hz?

I just purchased a Denco kit from ARB 3 weeks ago, cost me $3k. Comes complete with 2.1/2" mandrel bent exhaust system. Did the fitting myself. I think ARB allows about 8hrs to fit so you can add that onto the cost if not doing the job yourself.
