Outback South Australia

Does any one have any recent experience of the road conditions from Arkaroola to Camerons corner. Planning on travelling through there via BMW motor bike in late April

Generally it is quite corrugated, but you would be better to enquire much closer to your departure date.

Came through there last July.

Roads are in much better condition now than they used to be as there is lots of mining activity in the area. Roads are graded more often than before.

Just check the weather conditions before you tackle it. We haven't had rain in these parts for yonks but it can rain in late April

You will need to travel up the Strzelecki Track to near Merty Merty Station, then turn right pass Bollard's Lagoon, and voila, you're there!

Some maps have a track almost direct across to Hawker Gate, but as this passes through pastural lands, access is definately not permitted.

The Strzelecki is in good condition at the moment as far as Moomba, not too bad after that. The road from Merty Merty to Cameron's Corner is in good condition in the swales between the dunes, but you may find "blow outs" on the ridges. Just take it easy and don't be "Evil Kanevil" (did I spell him right?)

There is no fuel until to get to Cameron's Corner.

There used to be a "short cut" from the Strzelecki Track , just south of Strzelecki Crossing, east to the Bollards Lagoon road.
It was quite soft and sandy in sections across the dunes.
I guess it is still there, although I can't see it on any of the maps I have.

G'day Peter_n_Margaret

That track is not in use any more and has reverted to a station track and Merty Merty Station will not give permission to use it. I doubt too that it will be suitable for anything else but a Trail bike.

Thanks Willem, it is some time since we used it, but I recall that it was even signposted at the eastern end at one stage.
Pity. Was a good way to get away from the traffic....used it a few times with the F350 camper.

Cheers,
Peter.
