A mate & I want to take our 14 year old sons (1 each) camping for a couple of days during the next school holidays. Thing is we're not sure where to go. Looking for somewhere within 2 - 3 hours from home (Adelaide Hills), 4wd'ing or not, camping in tents, maybe a spot of fishing, somewhere interesting. Any ideas? went to the Flinders last year in October. The Grampians would be nice but a bit far for this trip as the boys have football and we need to work in around that.

Cheers

York Peninsula.

Perhaps Wallaroo or Moonta Bay on the western side. Adrossan or Stansbury on the eastern side.

All with 2 hours driving and all with jetties and beaches to fish from.
Take some crab racks and catch some crabs at low tide.
Or take some drop nets and catch them from the jetties.

Actually, that sounds like a great idea. We used to go crabbing with the family when we were kids and it was always fun. I heard there are a lot of crabs around at the moment. Crabbing on Yorkes - it's on the list!

Thanks

Louie we had a club trip to Stansbury a fortnight ago and there were very few crabs about but quite a few yellowfin whiting from the beach.
Moonta is a great spot for the kids and a nice drive along the coast at Balgowan usually a good chance of spotting a few dolphins.

Where abouts is Gleeson's Landing? I'm starting to think I might just take the Cross8 wagon and leave the missus with the 4runner for a few days as she will be on school holidays. So we may be restricted to dirt roads but no off road action.

Gleesons Landing is on the foot of the peninsula on the western side, its on the map. Magic spot! Cross 8 will make it a short way along the beach too.
For more of a weekend 4wd trip (but no fishing) theres the Border Track, Camp overnight at Red Bluff camp half way down the track, return home via Bordertown.
Another fishing one is the Coorong surf coast from the 42 mile crossing to Kingston.

Seriously the YP area from Ardrossan to Pt. Vincent is all a nice area with camping, fishing and crabbing available.

Krakka, I wouldn't take the wagoon on the beach anyway. Don't know how it would go in softy sand but it goes hard on dirt and in mud.

We were at Murray Bridge on the weekend. Went to pull the boat out and this guy said "how do you reckon you'll go pulling it out with that toy? You might need to use my Patrol". Yeah right buddy - sit back and watch. Oh, that was in economy as well!

Yorkes sounds like it might be the go.

Cheers

We spend a lot of our holiday time, and quite a few normal weekends up the river. It offers a lot of things but we're looking for something a bit different for the boys to experience this time. Besides that, there's not much river left at the moment, at least not where our place is.

Thanks

close to home is the deep creek conservation park. No 4wding 9unless you count the road down to blowhole beach)

but fishing and swimming there and bushwalking alont the rugged cliffs which drop away to backstairs passage

Thanks for all the replies. I can't wait to get away for a couple of days. Wherever we go I'm sure it will be good for us all. As far as my son & I go all we seem to do is go to & from sport. Nothing wrong with that at all as we play cricket in the same team, but I'm just about due for a break (after we win the flag together).

I'll put up a blog after the trip.
