Just after some more recent feed back am looking at doing trip down to the nullarbor via this road can any one tell me what it is like and where are some good spots for camping in the gawler ranges plus things to see. Also if any one knows good spots to camp near the marine park to see whales in August that would be great too.

Hi locklux

The road from Kingoonya is through station country, so you should have permission of the station before camping on their land. It was rather corrugated when we went through some time ago, but a nice drive.

When camping in the Gawler Range Park, you have to nominate where you will camp when you pay your park entrance and camp fees at the honesty box entrance stations. I would like the Rangers to know where I was camped if a fire went through. Go to one of the Organ Pipe sites for interesting rock formations.

When along the Nullabor, you can camp just about anywhere in this wide open land, or you can pay to camp at the roadhouses.Bush camping in the Yalata Aboriginal area is frowned upon, although there are some suitable roadside rest areas.Yalata Roadhouse is closed.Camping is not permitted at the Head of Bight where there is an information centre and whale viewing platforms. Some people do stop there. Interesting even when not whale season.

When you get to the Cliffs, watch for tracks off the highway aside from proper roads to the lookouts. At one of these, you can walk down the the water's edge. Don't go near the cliff edges as they can be undermined and are unstable. We have not been through at the right time of year to see any whales.

We didn't stop at Kingoonya. Didn't look inviting at all. All the roads on my map are public roads.

Just had to check the map - we went via Lake Everard, not taking the turn off to Lake Gairdner - so not much help to you on that one.

Hi Motherhen

Camping (stopping to rest) is allowed 50 metres either side of any public road in South Australia. Unless the law has changed in the last 5 years since I researched it.

Cheers

Phew - we usually pull up within 30 metres on stations (that's all i am admitting to). There is rarely any traffic at night so we get a quiet night.

Hi Willem - are your Telstra problems fully resolved?

There is a campsite at the southern end of Lake Gairdner. Take your own firewood as it is few and far between in that area.
