We are looking at purchasing the Hema brand GPS Navigation System that has both road and topographical maps. We were wondering if anyone has one and what they think of it?

This eBay option will give you the same functionality at half the price:

I'd be a little carefull here.
Not to say Peter is not giving good advice for a cheaper option, but IGO Street Navigation is not a "brand name" product and upgrades may be difficult.

Bill,

iGO works well so far. The 4.3" GPS I have came with a website link for updates and also given that it works from any program on the SD card it should run any available navigation program. Tried Miomap recently and that worked OK.

Cheers

Hi Peter

The listing says it comes with -

"OziExplorer Moving Map software for when you are out bush.
Registered in your name, configured and loaded with Hema and Geoscience maps."

Is that correct Peter? How good is the software for outback tracks? I have a 2003 version of the Magellan Streets and Maps which even has the internal track on our farm showing.

Isn't OziExplorer what most members here use?

How much can be loaded onto the 2 gb SD card? Will the unit take larger cards? Again with my older Magellan i am limited as it only takes a very small card, and i need to reload maps if travelling through several states.

I am very interested if it as useful as it reads. The price is less than my what my Magellan cost me second had a few years ago.

Correct - Oziexplorer is the program we use to run a range of maps. I use Hema for outback trips and the Victorian 100,000 maps for around the High Country. I get all of Vic on a 2GB card and all Hema will fit on a 1GB card.

Peter, do you know how it compares to the Garmin Nuvi 760 which seems to be the popular choice by members here? It is $599 from the shop.

The Nuvi like all Garmins will only run Garmin maps and so this rules out Oziexplorer and use of maps such as the Hema range. I don't exactly understadn why but its something to do with the type of image it can display.

That was quick! Thanks Peter for replying so fast.

I expect each to run its own. My Magellan runs its own Streets and Maps, which is very comprehensive on tracks. I want to make sure i get something as good for outback tracks. I also want the breadcrumb trail for back tracking as an essential feature.

In Mexico City this week so can't sleep!

I think you will find oziexplorer to be the most flexible program for outback tracks given that ypou can use maps from many different sources - Hema, Westprint etc rather than those provided by the GPS manufacturer.

Take a look at the oziexplorer site - you can download a trial version.
