I live about 10kms from Traralgon, I would describe it as more of a tremor than an earthquake.

Notso,
Tasmania only proved that Mexicans could swim.
Where would be the fun in us in NSW becoming Southerners?
Shoush all you QLDers. Don't start.

The really sad thing is that even though I left there 31 years ago, I still follow Aussie Rules!

Just some interesting facts about the Richter Scale. This scale is logarithmic and works in powers of ten. In other words a 4 on the richter scale is 10 times more powerful than a 3 and a 5 is 100 times more powerful than a 3. So a quake that measures 4.1, when compared to one that measures 4.8 is 7 times more powerful.

The kiwis may not agree but a quake in the 4s is a strong tremor. Much depends on how deep it occurs - the shallower it is, the harder it hits.

The Newcastle quake of 1989 was 5.5 on the scale and did considerable damage as building codes in Australia don't really account for this sort of incident. if the tremors continue in Victroria we might just see one larger than 5. It's location and depth will determine the outcome.

Up here in the Dandenongs it was enough to rattle the windows in the house, the rumble through the Hills went for a minute or so after the tremour. We also heard it before we felt it.
