Gold. That time of the year again.

Just wondering how many other members are packing up the 4B's
and heading bush in search of a few little nuggets. Most years I head straight to Kal however this time it will be via Clermont/Halls Creek.

One Easter many years ago David, a couple of us (we were single then) went to a place called O'Allen Ford on the Shoalhaven River near Braidwood N.S.W.

My mates were keen fishermen and went off doing that. Having nothing else to do, I got a washing up dish and started to pan some loose stones on a sandbar of the river.

I got 38 quids worth of gold in one hit (1961), sold it to a gold buyer in Sydney. When my mates came back they must have shifted about 10 tons of gravel & never saw a bloody thing.

The Mt. Browne Goldfield (Tibooburra) is north of where I live, locals go up there and fossick about, one fellow I knew reckons he never got anything, but gee he went back a lot. On a railway shunter's wage, he always had a new Toyota FWD every couple of years.

I'm talking with my wife about getting a 'detector' and giving FNQ a go. Anyway, good luck, it's a great hobby.

I though I had hit paydirt at Mt Browne Goldfield when I unearthed a 500gm Golden piece from the bowels of the earth only to discover, after I had washed it, that is was some sort of ancient metal wedge from the late 1800's and the gold was oxidisded mud!.

G'day David,

This Easter I am off to a dairy farm on the north coast of NSW. My neighbour owns it and says there is two old gold mines on the property and two on the property next door.

I leave mid May to join a Gold Prospecting Australia tagalong for 10 days at Laverton. Then myself and a Victorian couple are off by ourselves for thee weeks detecting, before I come home to Sydneytowards the end of July.

I detected at Halls Creek, Cue and Tobooburra last year .

Hi John,

I found about 25 nuggets last year. My problem was that the biggest was 4.9gm.

Where people arond me were getting 15, 24 28, 32 gm, I was getting tiny ones. Bummer.

When we first got married 39 and a bit years ago, I was doing some work in the back yard, digging up some weeds, any way I found what I thought was a Brass Compression Spacer that slides over copper tube, any way I put it in my shirt pocket and didn't give it any more thought, anyway when the Cook was doing the washing she found it and put it in a nicknack jar, she allways kept junk she found in my pockets, anyway several years later I was looking for a spacer washer, and just by chance I found this so called Compression Spacer in her jar, I gave it a clean up in the laundry tub, and found it was a Gold Wedding Ring, the Cook soaked in Jewellery Cleaner and later on she got it valued, it was worth $480-00 that was the only time I dug up Gold lol lol.

Cheers

Hi David M

In 1998 I was staying in Alice Springs and got talking to a guy who had been detecting around Tenant Creek. He claimed there was a lot of gold there and to prove it came back to see me with as much gold as a man can hold in two hands at once. Just amazing. Still in nugget form with lots of quartz. Must of been over $30,000 worth at the time when gold was $380 an ounce.

Been a fancy of mine for years to go out looking. Tried it once with a mate around Pine Creek (gold town in NT). Lots of gold mining going on there. Of course as amateurs not even really knowing how to tune a detector we did not find anything.

Wife and I are going to Mt Isa in in a couple of weeks and will be there for 4 weeks.

Is there anywhere I can go prospecting for gold up there?

Failing that where can I go fishing , or find a good pub. LOL

Regards BooBoo

We are certainly considering it. Being new to this gold detecting game I'm currently researching all I can about the various detectors available, SWMBO has agreed that maybe our $900 handout plus some could go towards the purchase of a detector. I just need to decide on the $'s we are prepared to spend to make that initial purchase, the detectors I like is, of course, the most expensive. Hopefully we will make it out into the bush (S/Cross/Kal) this winter.

you'll know sometime today (friday) if you'll be getting the $900.00

some smartass lawyer is contesting this in court as to whether or not the govt can give out this cash claiming it to be a gift.

and dont we all like the most expensive things...probably explains why i am married...lol lol lol

M No.1, so if he wins, every one is going to hand the money back?

And we as tax payers will just foot the bill for the government lawyers.

Thought there might be a few prospectors on site.

Would have been a lot more easy gold around in 1961 Dick.Always pays to carry a pan on your travels.
Know the feeling well Williem :) Makes ya heart sink a bit.

Signed up with Prospecting for Halls Creek in July Willie.
Still gold around Laverton. If you can see the town water tank your in the right area. Spent 3 months there last year and did OK.

Not a bad days work extfilm. How did you go next day. :)

Don't know much about Mt Isa Boo Boo. A look on the NT Mines Dept site under fossicking might be a good idea.
Cheers Dave M.

Lots of people who know one, or are thinking about doing it, or have tried it without success.

But how many active prospectors in that lot ?
